Kentucky Derby Update: August 22 Workout Report

King Guillermo performed his workout on the track as it was drying out from rain, and it was rated “fast” by the timers. He definitely came to run, zipping through the five furlongs in a rapid :58.20. His splits were :11.40, :23, :34.80 and :46.60, finishing six furlongs in 1:10.80 with Miguel Mena riding. Samy Camacho, based in Florida, will ride him on September 5.

Caracaro got in his workout at Saratoga Race Course, needing 1:01.02 for his five furlongs on a track that was sloppy after some rainstorms. His first quarter came in :25.60, with J.J. Delgado riding. His last race result was a runner-up finish at the Runhappy Travers Stakes (Grade I). The rains returned, and Tiz the Law was unable to get in his scheduled workout.

Honor A.P. completed his five-furlong workout at Del Mar in 1:00.20. His jockey, Mike Smith, was on hand for this exercise run; Smith was the one who rode Giacomo to a Kentucky Derby win in 2005, converting on 50-1 odds. His fractions were :12, :24, :36.20, and :47.60. He galloped out six furlongs, needing 1:12.20, and the seven-furlong time was 1:25.40. Honor A.P. is viewed as one of the strong second choices behind Tiz the Law at Churchill Downs.

Storm the Court also logged a five-furlong workout at Del Mar, rolling through in :59. That was a bit faster than the plan, but according to trainer Peter Eurton, the rider was not aware that the horse was going that fast, which Eurton described as “better than the alternative” in an interview.
