WEEKEND RACE CARD – 2020 BELMONT STAKES’ ODDS UPDATE

Third is now First!

The 2020 racing calendar was deeply upset by the arrival of the COVID-19 virus, but thankfully, after a long wait, we will finally see the Triple Crown get going TODAY, with the 152nd edition of the Belmont Stakes, straight from Belmont Park in New York.

A few hours still separate from official post time (set to kick off by 5:40 pm ET approximately – broadcast by NBC), so, let us take a look at the latest Betting Odds for this year’s Belmont Stakes.

2020 Belmont Stakes’ Odds Update

Saturday, June 20

Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets (5:42 pm ET, NBC)

The Belmont Stakes normally runs 1 ½ miles, but this year it will just run 1 1/8 miles for the first time as it is a preparatory race for the Kentucky Derby instead of the final race of the Triple Crown.

Take a look at the post positions and odds for each horse as well as our thoughts on the outcome.

THE HORSES

Tiz the Law is the favorite, and he has shown in prior races (the Florida Derby and the Holy Bull Stakes) that he likes to run on the outside. For Saturday, he has drawn the eight post on a route that will just include one turn. As a result, he should be able to set up nicely on the outside and then accelerate to the finish without getting caught up in any traffic.

Dr Post is a horse that also likes to get on the outside, and he certainly could pull off a similar scenario, where he hangs off the outside of the favorite until the jockey decides it is time to make a move.

Tap It to Win is in the #1 post position, which is historically the most favorable at Belmont Park in this race. However, the race is usually 3/8 of a mile longer, which means that those bets could be off. If Tap It to Win can surge out to an early lead and hold it for the distance, then he certainly could take the win.

Pneumatic comes in with a third place finish in the Matt Winn Stakes. He likes to get off to a fast start, but if he cannot grab a clean break, he could end up caught out wide. Cutting to one turn, as with the other two horses next to him, could give him the break he needs to get outside, turn and run to the finish line.

Modernist put up an impressive five-furlong workout last weekend. He can hang right on the back of the leader and then push forward for the win. He has won several 1 1/8 mile races, including February’s Risen Star. He’s definitely someone to consider adding to a superfecta to build some value.

If you’re looking for a sleeper, Max Player is one to consider. He has shown sneaky speed in some of his races, although his outcomes have not been impressive enough for him to rise the odds list for Saturday’s race.
