Kentucky Derby Contenders: Your Update with 10 Days to Go
Tiz the Law remains the heavy favorite, and with good reason. He posted a :59.40 five-furlong workout on Sunday at Saratoga Race Course. The only real factor weighing against the favorite is the fact that his only loss has come at Churchill Downs. In all of his other starts, he has won – and won big. Current pool odds at JAZZ Sports: -120 ml
Art Collector has two victories on the main track at Churchill Downs in the spring of 2020. It’s worth noting that he has never raced longer than 1 1/8 miles, but he was bred for the extra furlong that he will find on September 5. His sire, Bernardini, won the Travers Stakes (Grade I) at 1 ¼ miles, and his dam, Distorted Legacy, earned a place in the Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes (Grade I) at the same distance. Current pool odds: +600 ml.
Honor A.P. rolled through five furlongs in :59.40 on August 15, and he ran the same distance in 1:00.20 on August 22, adding a sixth furlong in 12 seconds flat. Current pool odds: +850 ml.
Authentic will have John Velazquez as his rider, a two-time Derby champion, with wins in 2011 (Animal Kingdom) and 2017 (Always Dreaming). Current pool odds: +1000 ml.
Ny Traffic has yet to win any of his six stakes races. However, at the Haskell Stakes (Grade I), he mounted a furious rally and finished just a nose back over 1 1/8 miles. The extra distance at Churchill Downs could lead to an intriguing finish. Current pool odds: +1400 ml.
King Guillermo will come to Churchill Downs after a four-month layoff from the racing circuit. He won the Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby (Grade II) in his last race, and he has put up some sparkling times in his Churchill Downs workouts. It will be interesting to see how he races with the elite talent. Current betting odds: +2000 ml.
Caracaro ran five furlongs in 1:01 flat on Saturday morning at Saratoga Race Course, the time perhaps slowed a bit by the sloppy track on a rainy morning. However, the horse appeared comfortable despite the wet course. Current betting odds: +1700 ml.
Dr Post is not yet committed to the Kentucky Derby. He did finish third at the Haskell Stakes and was the runner-up at the Belmont Stakes (Grade I). On Friday, he ran five furlongs in 1:00.60 at Saratoga Race Course, which would make him competitive. Current pool odds: +3000 ml.
