We’re just 11 days away from the 2020 edition of the Preakness Stakes from Pimlico Park in Baltimore. This year, thanks to the chaos wreaked by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Preakness serves as the final leg in the Triple Crown, which will not have a 2020 winner thanks to Authentic coming away with the win at the Kentucky Derby, upsetting Tiz the Law, who had won the Belmont Stakes back in June. Even so, the last leg of the Triple Crown will still offer plenty of intrigue.

You might well be wondering, of course, just where Tiz the Law is. On Tuesday, his owners announced that he would not run in the Preakness on October 3. The pending rematch between Tiz the Law and Authentic had provided much of the drama heading into next Saturday’s race. Barclay Tagg, Tiz the Law’s trainer, decided to opt out and allow Tiz the Law to get more rest ahead of the Breeders’ Cup Classic on November 7.
There was a bit of tension between the horse’s owner, Jack Knowlton, and Tagg at first, as Knowlton had made a statement that he wanted Tiz the Law to take on Authentic again after seeing Tiz the Law fail in an attempt to catch Authentic down the stretch. However, Tagg did not see any reason to run in Baltimore since there is no chance for him to win a Triple Crown this year.
This turns the intrigue in the race to the contest between Authentic and Art Collector, who was scratched at the Kentucky Derby due to a minor foot injury. He would have been the second choice in the morning odds but ended up sitting out. It will be interesting to see if one of the top choices wins, or if the lack of urgency without a Triple Crown leads to a third winner in the three signature races.
