Bold Ruler Handicap (Grade III)
Atop the horse results from the Bold Ruler Handicap was Majestic Dunhill, in just his second win over seven furlongs in a dozen tries. He had won his debut at the distance but then lost ten in a row. He needed every inch of those seven furlongs, chasing down Share the Ride along the stretch and winning by a head to get his first win in a graded stakes. He had been the co-favorite, at +250 odds, along with Share the Ride.
Majestic Dunhill had had several close calls in the last two years. He took second in the General George Stakes (Grade III) in 2019, as well as the First Defence Stakes on turf, on June 7, but now he has five wins in 21 career starts, upping his career earnings to $373,214.
The field had just four horses after the scratches of Phat Man and Wendell Fong, so when Share the Ride broke out to a challenging pace, that set the tone for the race. He hit the opening quarter in :23.37, with Majestic Dunhill sitting 1 ½ lengths back at the fraction. Arch Cat tried to make a run at Share the Ride at the turn, but he could not move into the lead. After Arch Cat fell back, Joel Rosario, Majestic Dunhill’s jockey, led Majestic Dunhill to the outside in the middle of the stretch and drew even by the sixteenth pole. From then on it was a sprint to the finish, and Majestic Dunhill pulled off the win in 1:22.48 on a track that was muddy.
Arch Cat came in four lengths behind Share the Ride for third place. After Arch Cat came Mihos to round out the order of finish.
