We talked about some of these contenders in an early article, with Jackie’s Warrior and Reinvestment Risk coming up, along with the filly Simply Ravishing.
A sleeper pick could be Team Merchants. His debut was unremarkable, as he finished behind Reinvestment Risk, but in his second race, Team Merchants beat out a tough field, including Speaker’s Corner. Team Merchants pulled away down the stretch to win by almost four lengths. His sire, Nyquist, is a former Kentucky Derby winner, so his performance should improve as the races get longer.
Mutasaabeq won his debut race at Saratoga on August 8, getting right out of the gate and leading from wire to wire. His performance at the Hopeful Stakes was a bit of a disappointment, as he came in third but was not close. After his debut, he has had issues with the gate, hesitating and finding himself behind from the beginning. The hope is that trainer Todd Pletcher can work that out of him and help him reach his full potential between now and next year.
Another filly worth discussing is Vequist, who was also sired by Nyquist. She dominated the Spinaway Stakes (Grade I) by seven lengths to follow up on a promising debut. The fact that Vequist pulled away at the end without any hesitation suggests that she could do the same against even stronger fields.
