Code of Honor has won multiple Grade I stakes and will have a full field of rivals – in terms of quality and quantity, as By My Standards, Owendale and Mr Freeze have all won graded stakes as well. Code of Honor won the Travers Stakes and the Jockey Club Gold Cup in 2019 but missed a lot of races in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, not racing until the Westchester Stakes on June 6, which he won. John Velazquez, his normal jockey, will be back on board for him this week.
By My Standards came in eighth at the Breeders’ Cup Classic in early November, his only failure to hit the board in seven 2020 starts, so he will be looking for a rebound. His rider, Gabriel Saez, notes that By My Standards loves the track at Churchill Downs more than he liked the surface at Keeneland in his last race. Owendale has won three Grade III stakes and finished second to By My Standards at the Alysheba Stakes. He won the Blame Stakes at Churchill Downs to start 2020; his turn at the Breeders’ Cup Championships produced a fifth-place result in the Dirt Mile. He came in second at the 2019 Clark Stakes, finishing behind Tom’s d’Etat. This race is the highlight of the racing card for the weekend.

The top four finishers in this race earn points toward the 2021 Kentucky Derby, in 10-4-2-1 format. This race dates back to 1920, and five of the winners of the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes have gone on to win the Kentucky Derby the next spring. The last dual winner was Super Saver in 2010. Uncaptured won this race in 2012 and then received the title of Canada’s Horse of the Year. Other famous winners of this race include Clyde Van Dusen, Reigh Count, Cannonade and Twenty Grand (all of whom went on to win the Kentucky Derby) as well as Captain Steve and Uncaptured.
