Today’s Racing News: There has been a lot of doom and gloom in the state of New Mexico over the past few weeks, with COVID cases spiking dramatically. With numbers on the rise, state officials decided that it was time to place restriction on non-essential businesses. That included Zia Park, which was forced to close in the middle of November.
The good news for race fans is that the restrictions are now on a county by county basis. Of the 1,684 new COVID cases announced in the state, 65 were in Lea County, the home of Zia Park. That number was deemed low enough to allow racing to return, which comes on Tuesday, December 2nd.

The Remaining Season Schedule at Zia Park
Besides the return of racing on Tuesday, Zia Park will also have a full card set to go on Wednesday. On the second day of action, the plan is to increase the previously advertised purse amounts by 30%, but that is pending approval by the New Mexico Racing Commission. Starting next week, live racing will be on the usual Monday through Wednesday schedule, all the way through to the final race day of the season, which comes on December 23rd.
While the barn will remain open through to the end of the year, there will be no more training allowed immediately following the final day of the race season.
As it stands at the moment, there are ten races set to go on Tuesday, so plenty of wagering opportunities for race fans looking to get back into horse betting at Zia Park.
