TURFWAY PARK CONTINUES TO IMPROVE

Last October, Churchill Downs Inc. purchased Turfway park for $46 million dollars and stated that they would commit a further $100 million to make improvements to the facility. The new owners are making horse racing news by living up to that promise in a big way.

The old grandstand was the first to go, with demolition taking place earlier this year in April. In its place Turfway Park will have a state-of-the-art facility that will include new food and drink spots, as well as historical racing machines and other forms of revenue. The race was on to get things ready for the current meet, which runs through to the end of the year.

With more money coming in, we can expect to see the purses climb at the updated park, but it is the new track that is generating a great deal of buzz at the moment. Jockeys are raving about the new surface, which could also help boost the quality of racing that we see at the iconic Kentucky track.

High Praise for the New Turfway Surface

While it is important to keep the fans happy when they head to the track, it’s also a good idea to make sure that the jockeys are also on board with the changes. That certainly seems to be the case with the new Tapeta track, as jockeys are already raving about the surface, although they are also saying that there is a bit of a learning curve that comes with riding on it.

Everyone is in agreement that it is a major upgrade from the Polytrack surface that was in place prior to the start of the current season. In particular, jockeys are saying that the new track offers many more ways to win, with front-runners and off the pace horses all now having a fair shot at getting to the finish line first. That is great news for everyone who loves to see competitive racing.

With a quality track surface in place, GM Chip Bach believes that more talented horses and jockeys will now make the trek to Turfway Park in seasons to come. It was great to see this fantastic track saved, but even better to see it thriving under new ownership.
