Breeders’ Cup Results: Authentic to become Horse of the Year?
To start with our look at Breeders’ Cup results, let’s begin with the Classic. Authentic had faced questions about running 1 ¼ miles, and he answered those at Churchill Downs. On Saturday, the questions focused on how Authentic would fare in competition against top older horses, and so he was the third choice. All he did was push hard from the beginning to beat Improbable by 2 ¼ lengths.
Tarnawa won the Breeders’ Cup Turf, mounting a huge rally after the third turn to roar past Magical (the favorite) and the pacesetter, Channel Maker, blowing to a win in the last furlong, prevailing by a length.
Monomoy Girl ran to victory at the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, becoming the fourth horse to win this race more than once. In the last quarter mile (out of 1 1/8 miles overall), she pulled away from Swiss Skydiver. Monomoy Girl has come in as the even-money favorite and showed that she had the speed to finish, likely cementing her spot in the Hall of Fame.
The Breeders’ Cup almost always has at least one race that features a huge payoff to a long shot, and it was the BC Mile that did that this year. Order of Australia prevailed on grass at +7300 odds. In fact, Aidan O’Brien, Order of Australia’s trainer, swept the trifecta, as Circus Maximum and Lope Y Fernandez, also in his barn, came in second and third. Order of Australia paid $148.40 on a $2 bet to win, the second-biggest total ever in a Breeders’ Cup race.
Essential Quality ran to victory in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, taking advantage of a swift pace and just streaking down the middle of Keeneland’s main track to victory. Hot Rod Charlie, who wasn’t even part of the original field on October 28, came in second at +9400 odds. The favorite, Jackie’s Warrior, came in fourth, 3 ¼ lengths back.
