Horse Racing Results – Graded Stakes Results Week Ending Dec. 20, 2020
Over the course of the next few weeks; much of our attention is going to be on the graded stakes races for the 2021 Kentucky Derby. Besides that, we will also be keeping an eye on all the major stakes races taking place each weekend.
We will preview those races ahead of time, and then deliver recaps and results the following Monday. The goal here is to deliver horse racing results that better prepare you for how to play the upcoming Derby. There is going to be a lot of ground to cover; so let’s get started with the major horse racing results from this past weekend.
Los Alamitos Futurity (G2)
The Road to the Derby ran through Los Alamitos over the weekend, with the Futurity serving as the 9th of the 36 North American races that will count as qualifiers for the Kentucky Derby. If you missed this one, you should definitely go watch a replay, as it turned into an absolute thriller.
Red Flag came into the races as the odds-on favorite; but it turned out to be a disappointing day for bettors who had their money on that horse. He tried to make a move as they turned into the stretch, but he couldn’t sustain it, ending up finishing 4th.
At the end of the day; it came down to trying to catch The Great One, a longshot which came ever so close to springing the upset. He led from the off, but was run down at the post by Spielberg, who took it by a nose. Equibase had the speed figure at 99; which was the lowest number since 2013, when Shared Belief also posted that figure. Spielberg paid $5.80 for the win.
Mr. Prospector Stakes (G3)
The only other graded stakes race on the schedule over the weekend was the Mr. Prospector at Gulfstream Park. It was an 11-horse field for this one; with a strong finish enough to get Sleepy Eyes Todd to the finish line first.
Wind of Change set a solid early pace, which set things up nicely for the closers in the field. The eventual winner begam to make move at the ½ mile pole and held of the hard charging Firenze Fire to get the win by a length and a half. Mind Control rounded out the top 3. Sleepy Eyes Todd paid $12.20 for the win.
