BREEDERS’ CUP SPECIAL: TOM’S D’ETAT BIO & LATEST RACING ODDS

0

Racing Odds: Tom’s d’Etat is one of the older horses we expect to see in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, currently the third-ranked horse in the field that represents the best in horse racing. He was foaled in 2013 and won his first race in 2016, at Saratoga. However, he missed over a year across 2017 and 2018 after fracturing a leg. He came back to win his first stakes race on December 22, 2018, at the Tenacious Stakes.

Let’s take a closer look at his career as we enter the week of the 2020 Breeders’ Cup and find below the latest Horse Racing Odds, provided by classic online racebook JAZZSports.ag:

Breeders’ Cup Special: Tom’s d’Etat Bio

Tom’s d’Etat had a bit of a setback at the start of 2019, when he ran at the Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (Grade I), finishing ninth. His first 2019 win came at the Alydar Stakes, where he eked out a one-length win over Wooderson. He started to pick more wins over the course of 2019, and racing odds bettors took notice. He won the Fayette Stakes on October 26, running away from Mr Freeze by more than four lengths on a wet day. The Clark Handicap (Grade I) win on November 29 was his biggest victory to that point. He entered as a -111 favorite and beat Mr Freeze and Owendale.

In 2020, Tom’s d’Etat picked up a huge win on April 11 at the Oaklawn Mile Stakes, edging out Improbable, a winner of multiple Grade I stakes, by three-fourths of a length on a sloppy track. He beat out By My Standards, a winner in several graded stakes, at the Stephen Foster Stakes (Grade II) on June 27.

In the rankings for the Breeders’ Cup Classic, Tom’s d’Etat sits just behind Maximum Security and Tiz the Law. His career earnings exceed $1.7 million. He has done well in races coming after layoffs, so the fact that he has gone a long period of time between races and still won the next race, which is why his crew held him out of the Fayette Stakes and the Jockey Club Gold Cup. Tom’s d’Etat is definitely a horse to consider in your trifecta for the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Online Betting: COUNTDOWN TO BREEDERS’ CUP: AUTHENTIC BIO

If you watched the 2020 Kentucky Derby online betting, then you saw Authentic pull off the upset win over Tiz the Law. Authentic’s win wasn’t a fluke, by any means; he was also the winner of the Sham Stakes, San Felipe Stakes and Haskell Stakes. He would have been an intriguing contender for the Triple Crown, but he had to be scratched from the Belmont Stakes (the first Triple Crown leg this year due to COVID-19 rescheduling) due to a minor foot injury.

As we look at Breeders’ Cup Classic picks, let’s dive in closer with a look at Authentic’s background, but before we do that, check out some of the latest Breeders’ Cup betting odds, courtesy of online betting hub JAZZSports.ag.

Breeders’ Cup Bio: Authentic

Authentic was one of the tenth foal crop sired by Into Mischief, winner of the Los Alamitos Futurity and well known as a sire for sprinters, including Covfefe, who won an Eclipse Award. Authentic’s dam, Flawless, won her debut by 13 ¼ lengths but injured a tendon in her second race, bringing her career to a premature end. Authentic is the third winner that Flawless has produced, out of just four foals so far. His trainer throughout his racing career has been the estimable Bob Baffert.

Authentic won his first start, on November 9, 2019, in a maiden special weight race at Del Mar, covering 5 ½ furlongs. He stalked the early leader and then took the read in the stretch, winning by 1 ½ lengths.

Authentic’s three-year-old season began with a 7 ¾-length win at the Sham Stakes. His first race against elite competition was the San Felipe Stakes, where he pulled into an early lead and held on to win by 2 ¼ lengths, gaining 50 points toward Kentucky Derby qualification. At the Kentucky Derby, he entered as the third online betting choice because of questions about his stamina but ended up winning. The Preakness Stakes was not as successful for him; despite entering as the favorite, he took a bump at the start from Max Player but took an early lead. Swiss Skydiver pulled into the lead at the last turn, and she prevailed over Authentic by a neck.

Next up for Authentic is the Breeders’ Cup Classic, set for November 7 at Keeneland Race Course. His Kentucky Derby win earned him an automatic entry into a field that will contain the top horses in the world.

BREEDERS’ CUP CLASSIC: BETTING ODDS UPDATE

0
breeders-cup-preview

The Breeders’ Cup Classic is one of the most important races in deciding the winner of the Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year. In 2020, there was no Triple Crown winner, and no horse has emerged as “the” superstar to this point. So when the 37th Breeders’ Cup Classic takes place on November 7, the stakes will be even higher than they would be in a typical year.

The Grade I race has a $6 million purse that has drawn a number of terrific three-year-old horses, along with older horses with significant accomplishments. Run over 1 ¼ miles on dirt, this race will bring the 14-event World Championships to a close. You can catch the broadcast on NBC, with the post time set at 5:13 p.m. Eastern time.

Online Horse Betting: Breeders’ Cup Classic Update

Improbable looks to be the likely horse betting favorite at post time, thanks to three straight wins in Grade I stakes. He beat Higher Power by 3 ¼ lengths at the Hollywood Gold Cup in June. He then beat Tom’s D’Etat and By My Standards at the Whitney Stakes in August, winning by two lengths. At the Awesome Again Stakes, he beat Maximum Security by 4 ½ lengths. He posted 120 Equibase Speed Figures in the Whitney and Awesome Again, which is better than any of the three-year-old winners in Triple Crown races.

There were questions about Improbable’s stamina in races longer than 1 1/8 miles, but his win at the Gold Cup (1 ¼ miles) and his solid finishes in wins at the Whitney and Awesome Again (both 1 1/8 miles) have answered those. His jockey will be Irad Ortiz Jr, who rode Vino Rosso to a Breeders’ Cup Classic win a year ago. His plan will likely be to keep Improbable close to the lead and then make a run after the turn into the homestretch.

BREEDERS’ CUP SPECIAL: MAXIMUM SECURITY BIO

Few horses have had as tumultuous a career as Maximum Security, In 2019, he was named the American Champion among three-year-old male horses. His year included wins at the Florida Derby, the Haskell Invitational, the Bold Ruler Handicap and the Cigar Mile. In one of the most shocking finishes in the history of the Kentucky Derby, he finished first but was disqualified because of interference.

As we look ahead to the Breeders’ Cup Classic next weekend, let’s review Maximum Security’s story and his betting odds, alongside some other prices, as they are currently featured at live horse racing site JAZZSports.ag.

Breeders’ Cup Bio: Maximum Security

Maximum Security was sired by the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner in 2014 (New Year’s Day). Ironically, New Year’s Day had been considered disappointing as a sire before Maximum Security became his first horse that won a “graded” stakes. His dam, Lil Indy, is half-sister to Flat Out, who won several Grade I stakes.

After going through that dramatic 2019, Maximum Security had even more uncertainty in 2020. His trainer, Jason Servis, was chosen for his high winning percentage with horses; his training style includes focusing on gallops that are slow and regular with bursts at the end; other trainers generally schedule workouts less frequently but have the horses go faster. In March 2020, though, Servis was indicted for allegations related to doping, and Maximum Security’s new trainer was Bob Baffert.

Before the change, Maximum Security had gone to Saudi Arabia for the Saudi Cup, set for February 29. The Cup had multiple Grade or Group 1 winners in the field, such as Midnight Bisou, Mucho Gusto, and McKinzie. At the Saudi Cup, Capezzano moved into an early lead, with Maximum Security hanging in third before moving into the lead with approximately 100 yards left and pushing to the win.

Live horse racing fans enjoyed his turns at the San Diego Handicap (his first start for Baffert) and the Pacific Classic Stakes. He beat Sharp Samurai at the Pacific Classic Stakes by 1 ½ lengths, gaining an automatic entry into the Breeder’s Cup Classic.

In his last race, the Awesome Again Stakes, he dueled with Improbable. Maximum Security stalked the pace until the far turn, but Improbable surged into the lead, and Maximum Security could not keep up. It will be interesting to see how he fares against some of the top horses in the sport.

BREEDERS’ CUP SPECIAL: TIZ THE LAW BIO

As you consider your Breeders’ Cup picks ahead of next weekend’s 14-race festival at Keeneland Race Course, one horse that should stand out for you is Tiz The Law. He had run off four wins in a row, including three Grade I stakes, but a runner-up finish at the Kentucky Derby prompted trainer Barclay Tagg to pull him out of the Preakness Stakes and rest him ahead of the Breeders’ Cup.

Let’s take a closer look at the 2020 Belmont Stakes winner below, but before we do that, how about we check out some of the hottest Breeders’ Cup Odds now available, courtesy of classic online racebook JAZZSports.ag

Breeders’ Cup Picks: Tiz the Law Bio

Tiz The Law ended a long drought among New York-bred horses when he won the Belmont Stakes. The last horse bred in the same state as the Belmont was Forester, who won it all the way back in 1882. Tiz The Law also won the Travers Stakes in 2020 and had been the heavy favorite going into the Kentucky Derby before he finished as runner-up to Authentic.

Tiz The Law is from Constitution’s first foal crop. Constitution had been bred in Kentucky and won the Florida Derby and the Donn Handicap. His dam was Tizfiz, who had seven track victories, including the San Gorgonio Handicap (Grade II).

In his two-year-old season, Tiz The Law started his racing career on August 8, 2019, with a win at a maiden special weight race at Saratoga for two-year-old horses bred in New York. He stalked a quick early pace and then moved to the outside, pushing to the lead and winning by 4 ¼ lengths.

His second race came on October 5, 2019, at the Champagne Stakes, the top race in New York for two-year-old colts. He stumbled early and found a place at the rear of the pack. He tried to make a move at the turn but found some traffic. When room opened up, he hit the gas and won by four lengths. He earned an entry into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile with that win, but Tagg thought the race (four weeks later) was just too close.

As a three-year-old, Tiz The Law went on a run that came to a disappointing end at the Kentucky Derby, but, at the Breeders’ Cup Classic, he’ll have a chance to bring 2020 to a more successful close.

Tapit Today picked up her first win in a graded stakes on Sunday in the Athenia Stakes. She entered as the fourth choice, at +500 odds, coming out of Post 8 with Jose Ortiz on board. Tapit Today started building a lead at the 1/8 pole and won by a length, finishing the 1 1/16 mile on turf in 1:45.26.

Such horses as Nyquist, Exaggerator, Brody’s Cause, Good Magic, Game Winner, Mr. Money, Complexity and others have come out of a solid Breeders’ Cup Juvenile to fare well as a three-year old.

Breeders’ Cup News: Why You Should Consider Longshots in the Juvenile

Longshots have paid out better in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile over the last 20 years than in many of the other races in the festival. Of the last 20 winners, 15 have paid out $10 or more on a $2 bet, and eight of those 20 have led to winners with double-digit odds. Five of those winners paid out at least $30 on a $2 win bet

There have only been four favorites to win the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in the last 20 years: War Pass (2007), Uncle Mo (2010), Shanghai Bobby (2012) and Game Winner (2018).

Five of the 20 winners have paid between +350 and +500, which means that the other 11 winners have paid off as longshots. Eight of them win at +1050 or higher.

This means that the average odds for the Juvenile winner over the last 20 years has been +1153, with a median of +670. The median would lead to a payout of $15.40 on a $2 bet.

Of those eight double-digit winners, four paid more than +2500 odds: Action This Day (+2680 in 2003), Wilko (+2830 in 2004), Vale of York (+3060) in 2009 and Storm the Court (+4590) a year ago. Vale of York is a bit of an outlier, as he had come over from Italy and picked up his upset on a main track that was synthetic. The other double-digit longshots had cracked the top three in their last prep race, but only two of them won, and those winners both came from maiden special weight races.

The key is to take a look at prospects that have not been raced heavily who either did well in graded stakes or just won a maiden race. Horses that can hang off the pace and pour it on late tend to do well here too.

BREEDERS’ CUP SPECIAL: IMPROBABLE BIO

improbable2020

We’re less than two weeks from the 2020 Breeders’ Cup Championships, set for Keeneland Race Course on November 6 and 7.

One of the most impressive horses that will run at Keeneland that weekend is Improbable, winner of the Hollywood Gold Cup, Whitney Stakes and Awesome Again Stakes. He also took first as a two-year-old in the Los Alamitos Futurity in 2018 and, in 2019, he was the first choice in the Kentucky Derby before settling for fourth.

Breeders’ Cup 2020 – A Look at Improbable

Improbable’s trainer is the legendary Bob Baffert, who has become one of the top trainers in horse racing history in addition to the domination his horses have shown in recent years. Improbable was bred by G. Watts Humphrey Jr and St. George Farm in Kentucky, and his white stockings and sizable white blaze make him a “chrome-bedecked” colt. Improbable’s dam (Rare Event) was a daughter of A.P. Indy, and Improbable was her first live foal. There was oxygen deprivation in the delivery, and he showed “dummy foal” syndrome in the first few days after birth. He needed medical care before recovering. Eventually, he ended up occupying the same stall in Baffert’s stables as Justify, the former Triple Crown winner who had later retired.

Improbable made his first race on September 29, 2018, at Santa Anita Park. Starting three wide into the final turn, Improbable pulled ahead, along with Stretford End. In the last 100 yards, Improbable found another gear and won by a neck. His first stakes race was next – the Street Sense Stakes at Churchill Downs. He hung in the middle of the pack for most of the way before taking the lead in the stretch and then winning by 7 ¼ lengths.

Improbable won his first Grade I stakes in December 2018 at the Los Alamitos Futurity. He showed the strategy that would become his signature: staying off the pace and then dropping the hammer. At the Los Alamitos Futurity, he won by five lengths.

In 2019, Improbable had a down year, as the favorite at both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, but he finished fourth and sixth, respectively. He came in fifth at the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile to finish 2019.

2020 has been Improbable’s finest year so far, with three consecutive wins in Grade I stakes and an automatic spot in the 2020 Breeders’ Cup Classic. As a horse who is peaking, he is definitely a horse you should have on your wager card.

Magic at Midnight has won all four of the races she has started – by a combined 25 ½ lengths. Now she makes her debut in a graded stakes, with her top competition coming from Jo Jo Air, who has already won multiple stakes races. Magic at Midnight is the four-year-old daughter of Midnight Lute; in her grass debut, she won a five-furlong turf allowance on August 14 at Del Mar, pulling away by 2 ¾ lengths. Jo Jo Air will enter her 13th race at nine different tracks, but all of her events have been turf sprints. She was the heavy favorite in a five-furlong stakes on October 1 at Pimlico but was beaten handily. Her last win came at Del Mar in the Daiseycutter on July 24. In that race, Flavien Prat was on board, and he will ride her on  Saturday. An Eddie Surprise is the biggest money winner in this field, but she’s had a long break after winning the Wishing Well Stakes at Santa Anita on February 17, over 5 ½ furlongs on this same turf course. This is a course she loves – all five of her career victories have taken place here.

Odds have not yet been released, but Raymundos Secret is the likely starting favorite thanks to the Mabee as well as another allowance won at Del Mar back in August. She has won five races in seven starts, with the Mabee win her first in a graded stakes. At the Mabee, she led from wire to wire, posting fractions of :48.60 and 1:12.52.
