BREEDERS’ CUP DIRT MILE 2020: THE CONTENDERS

0
vekoma-breeders-cup-2020

We’re just a few weeks away from the Breeders’ Cup Championships on November 6 and 7, and one of the deepest races will be the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. We don’t know yet whether Vekoma will be in the Dirt Mile or the Sprint, but commitments from the likes of Art Collector and War of Will, along with strong showings from Mr. Money, Knicks Go and Complexity will make this an interesting race.

Let’s take a look at some of the top contenders, starting with a comparison of their recent speed figures, using three different systems, provided by our good friends at popular online racebook JAZZSports.ag.

Top Contenders Close-Up

Vekoma and Complexity are right at the top, with Timeform and Brisnet varying slightly as to which horse is the fastest. Knicks Go won an allowance race in his last start, but his speed ratings put him right with these two top contenders. So if you’re looking for a horse that is likely to be well down the odds list, then consider Knocks Go.

Look at the most recent figures for Mr. Money and Mr Freeze. Their best speed figures are considerably higher than their last speed figures, even though they won both of their most recent races in the listings. Mr. Money won the Ack Ack Stakes, and Mr. Freeze won the Fayette Stakes; it does not look like either one of those races offers enough of a challenge to push the horses fast enough to post figures. Another possibility is that the horses peaked earlier in the year.

Let’s take a look now at the top accomplishment of each of the horses currently slated for the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.

Vekoma: two wins in Grade I stakes

Complexity: Won the Champagne Stakes (Grade I) in 2019

Art Collector: Won the Blue Grass Stakes (Grade II) in 2020

Knicks Go: Won the Breeders’ Futurity (Grade I) in 2018

War of Will: Won Grade I stakes on both dirt and turf in 2020

Mr. Money: Five wins in Grade III stakes

Rushie: Has won one Grade II stakes

Sharp Samurai: Three wins in Grade II stakes

Mr Freeze: Won the Gulfstream Park Mile (Grade II)

Pirate’s Punch: One win in a Grade III stakes

Midcourt: One win in a Grade II stakes

Silver Dust: Three wins in Grade III stakes

Aurelius Maximus: Came in second at the 2020 Fayette Stakes (Grade II)

Jesus’ Team: Third place in the 2020 Preakness Stakes

Hog Creek Hustle: One win in a Grade I stakes

True Timber: Multiple places in Grade I stakes

Weekend Recap

Saturday, October 17

Lexus Raven Run Stakes

Venetian Harbor rolled to a fairly easy victory on Saturday, as the only real speed in this seven-furlong race. As a result, she did not feel much challenge and just settled into a moderate pace, rather than running away from the rest of the pack. As a result, she only edged out Finite by a neck. Her fractions were :23.06 and :46.17, and then she finished in 1:23.03 on a fast track. She entered the race as the favorite and paid $5.20 on a $2 bet to win. This was the best effort that Finite had shown since she won five races in a row, culminating in the Rachel Alexandra (Grade II) on February 15. She beat Grand Clu Classe for third by half a length. After that, in order of finish, came Reagan’s Edge, Tonalist’s Shape, Secondary Market, Four Graces and Secret Keeper.

Next up for Venetian Harbor is a trip to the Breeders’ Cup for the Filly and Mare Sprint on November 7, which will cover the same seven-furlong course at Keeneland. Also in that race, Gamine will run; this will give Venetian Harbor a chance to avenge a second-place finish to Gamine at the Test Stakes (Grade I) in her last start. Venetian Harbor has also been the runner-up to Speech and Swiss Skydiver in graded stakes, with both races running 1 1/16 miles. Her debut was a win at the one-mile Las Virgenes Stakes (Grade II), which she won by 9 ¼ lengths.

Autumn Miss Stakes

Warren’s Showtime delivered Win #1000 for trainer Craig Lewis, storming back from fifth place to win by a neck. Warren’s Showtime was the favorite in a seven-horse field after finishing third at the Del Mar Oaks (Grade I) in her last race. Quiet Secretary jumped out to the early lead, opening up a two-length advantage with fractions of :22.50 and :45.42 in the first half. At the three-quarter pole, Quiet Secretary came in by 1:09.69; Warren’s Showtime was still fifth at that point. Then she was angled wide by rider Flavien Prat to make an open run along the outside, and she found a new gear to finish the mile at 1:33.77 on firm turf.

The rest of the field finished in this order: Going to Vegas, Guitty, Croughavouke, Quiet Secretary and Mind Out. Warren’s Showtime now has a 6-0-5 record in 13 starts, with career winnings of $520,251.

This race is generally a place for some of the best filly sprinters in North America as four of these ten horses have won graded stakes and four others have finished in the money at graded stakes.

Finite has the top career earning in the field, at more than $650,000 – the bulk of it from her win at the Rachel Alexandra Stakes (Grade II) in February. Venetian Harbor won the Las Virgenes Stakes (Grade II) in February and finished just behind Gamine in the Test Stakes (Grade I).

Tonalist’s Shape has won six races in nine starts, including a victory in February at the Davona Dale Stakes (Grade II). However, her last race saw her get stuck in traffic and come in fifth at the Charles Town Oaks (Grade III).

Four Graces won on seven furlongs over this same course in July, at the Beaumont Stakes (Grade III). Never Forget came in third at the Eight Bells. Grand Cru Classe won the Weber City Miss Stakes in September and is vying for her first win in a graded stakes.

Reagan’s Edge came in second at the Prioress Stakes (Grade II), and Secret Keeper was the runner-up in her last race, the Torrey Pines Stakes (Grade III), so you have a deep field of talent here.

BREEDERS’ CUP UPDATE: FOUR HORSES TO WATCH

0
AUNT-PEARL

We’re just a few weeks away from the 2020 Breeders’ Cup World Championships, set for November 6 and 7 from Keeneland Rae Course. The 14 races over the weekend will offer over $31 million in purse money and other awards.

And while we wait for the Odds to Win courtesy of JAZZSports.ag, let us take a look at four horses – two on the rise, and two who may have peaked early.

Breeders’ Cup Update: Four Horses to Watch

On the Rise: Jackie’s Warrior

Jackie’s Warrior won the Champagne Stakes (Grade I) at Belmont Park on Saturday, a one-turn mile course. That’s still a little bit shorter than the 1 1/6-mile Breeders’ Cup Juvenile that he will face on November 6, a course with two turns, but he delivered as the favorite at Belmont, pulling away by 5 ½ lengths over Reinvestment Risk. That was the second time he had beaten Reinvestment Risk after a win at the Hopeful Stakes in September. He also tied his best Equibase Speed Figure (102) and is still perfect with four wins in four starts. His rider for the Breeders’ Cup will be Joel Rosario, who has 11 victories in Breeders’ Cup races, including a win at the 2018 Juvenile atop Game Winner.

On the Rise: Aunt Pearl

On October 7, Aunt Pearl dominated the Jessamine Stakes (Grade II) at Keeneland, on the same course where she will run the Juvenile Fillies Turf at the Breeders’ Cup on November 6. Getting the win on the same course should give her an advantage, particularly given the fact that her challengers are likely to come from Europe. Those horses generally start out in the rear and bring big finishes, but Aunt Pearl showed that she can dominate the pace. She had a :22.28 opening quarter and a half in :46.65 but closed with her last 1/16 of a mile at :06.15.

On the Downslope: Tacitus

Tacitus came in third out of five despite running as the favorite at the Jockey Club Gold Cup (Grade I) on October 10. That was his second consecutive Grade I stakes race as a heavy favorite in which he did not come close to winning. The Breeders’ Cup Classic might be a better scenario, as he came in second at the Belmont and the Travers Stakes last year and at the Woodward Handicap this year, but it’s hard to argue that he is a legitimate contender to win.

On the Downslope: Love

Love’s form isn’t going down, but it sounds like she will miss the World Championship altogether. She won the 2020 Investec Epsom Oaks and the QIPCO One Thousand Guineas, and in her career she has three Group 1 victories, all by at least 4 ¼ lengths. However, trainer Aidan O’Brien looks ready to rest her for her four-year-old season.

WEEKEND RECAP: JACKIE’S WARRIOR WINS CHAMPAGNE STAKES, HARD LOVE TAKES FRIZETTE

0
JACKIES_WARRIOR_CHAMPAGNE_STAKES

We had several Grade I stakes races over the weekend as we approach the Breeders’ Cup Classic the first week in November. At Belmont Park, the Champagne Stakes, the Frizette Stakes, the Flower Bowl Stakes and the Jockey Club Gold Cup all took place, and Keeneland Race Course hosted the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup.

Let us take a look at all the five top-shelf races and the results, courtesy of our friends at JAZZSports Racebook

Weekend Racing Recap

Saturday, October 10

Champagne Stakes

Jackie’s Warrior maintained a perfect racing record, with four wins in four starts, pulling away for a 5 ½-length victory in his first start at a mile. The two-year-old colt of Maclean’s Music came away with an automatic entry in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on November 6. He was the favorite among six horses, with splits of :23.12 and :46.54 before a three-quarter time of 1:10.68. He finished at 1:35.42 on a fast track. Reinvestment Risk came in second, holding the runner-up slot throughout the race. Midnight Bourbon was in third the whole way and finished 8 ¾ lengths behind Reinvestment Risk. Civil War finished the superfecta.

Frizette Stakes

Hard Love rolled to the win at the Frizette Stakes on Saturday, with Manuel Franco on board. A two-year-old colt sired by Kitten’s Joy, he won by two lengths over Big Everest, who finished 3 ½ lengths ahead of Hardison. Mira Mission, a two-year-old gelding, completed the superfecta, 2 ½ lengths back of Hardison.

Flower Bowl Stakes

Civil Union got the best of an exciting finishing furlong, winning in a photo finish over My Sister Nat to win over 1 ¼ miles on the turf. Civil Union seems to have come into her own at the age of five years old. She settled at the rear of the back as Cambier Parc, the favorite, ran out to a quick lead but then let Lovely Lucky set the pace. Civil Union’s rider, Joel Rosario, saved some ground around the last bend and then ran to the front by the eighth pole and surging forward for the win. She finished the distance in 2:01.28.

Jockey Club Gold Cup

Happy Saver won in his fourth start, brushing up against the rail down the stretch to take the lead, pushing past Mystic Guide. He covered the 1 ¼ mile distance in 2:01.77, winning by ¾ of a length. The favorite was Tacitus, but he came in third place in his sixth Grade I race after starting out with a soft pace. Prioritize finished fourth to complete the superfecta, 6 ¼ lengths back of Tacitus. The field ended up with just five horses, and they were put in the outside five stalls in the starting gate, since 10-furlong races at Belmont begin on the turn. Happy Saver completed the half-mile in :49.68 and three-quarters in 1:13.61, with the mile coming at 1:37.25.

Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup

Harvey’s Lil Goil won the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup as the third choice, happy to let Sweet Melania hold the early lead. The two led through opening fractions of :23.89, :47.75 and 1:12.16, and then Harvey’s Lil Goil started to make her move through the far turn. She had the lead coming into the home stretch and won by ¾ of a length, finishing the 1 1/8 mile ride on the turf in 1:48.72. Micheline pulled by the favorite, Magic Attitude, to take second by a half-length, and the same distance separated Magic Attitude and Red Lark, who finished fourth.

Tacitus is the favorite; he is a four-year-old colt, bred in Kentucky, with an HRN rating of 7.78, which is tops in the field. He was the runner-up to Global Campaign at the Woodward Stakes (Grade I) on September 5 at Saratoga. He also won the Suburban Handicap (Grade II) over 1 ¼ miles on the dirt track at Belmont in 1:59.51. Mystic Guide won the Jim Dandy Stakes (Grade II) on September 5 at Saratoga, finishing the 1 1/8 mile race on dirt in 1:49.00. BREEDERS” CUP UPDATE: WAR OF WILL IS IN!

0
war-of-will

War of Will, who has run in three starts on turf in 2020, will switch over to dirt on November 7, competing in the Big Ass Fan Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (Grade I) on November 7, according to his trainer, Mark Casse.

Breeders’ Cup Update: War of Will Is In

As a three-year-old, the colt of War Front turned in transcendent results on dirt, winning the Preakness Stakes (Grade I), the Risen Star Stakes (Grade II) and the Lecomte Stakes (Grade III). During the second half of the year, his metrics declined, as he settled for ninth place at the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic (Grade I) held at Santa Anita Park.

In 2020, War of Will has won once in three starts. At the Shoemaker Mile (Grade I) on May 25, he came in sixth, and then he won the Maker’s Mark Mile Stakes (Grade I) on July 10 at Keeneland Race Course. His last start came on September 19, when he entered the Ricoh Woodbine Mile (Grade I) as the favorite and ended up coming in third.

Before we go on, don’t forget to keep an eye out for the freshest Breeders’ Cup Odds to Win, coming up soon at JAZZSports.ag Racebook.

Casse has said that this will likely be War of Will’s last race before retiring to stud, and that it would be nice to finish the year (and his career) with Grade I wins on both turf and dirt. His lifetime earnings total more than $1.8 million, and Claiborne Farm bought an interest in him this summer, for him to retire there.

The Woodbine Mile result was particularly disappointing to Casse, as War of Will seemed happy to race just behind the leader and then wait for the stretch, when Starship Jubilee pulled away from him to win by 1 ¾ lengths. That performance made Casse conclude that War of Will did not like the turf course at Woodbine. In previous races there, as a two-year-old, he came in third in an August 2018 maiden race and followed that up with a second-place finish at the Summer Stakes (Grade I) in September 2018.

Casse has several other horses set to run in the Breeders’ Cup over November 6 and 7. They include Got Stormy in the Turf Spring (Grade I), Spanish Loveaffair in the Juvenile fillies Turf (Grade I), Gretzky the Great and Dolder Grand in the Juvenile Turf (Grade I), March to the Arch (runner-up at the Woodbine Mile) in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (Grade I), and Dirty Dangle in the Juvenile Turf Sprint (Grade II).

Spanish Loveaffair’s participation will depend on her performance at Keeneland this week, as she is a +350 morning line shot in the Jessamine Stakes (Grade II) on Wednesday. Got Stormy is the prohibitive favorite at the Buffalo Trace Franklin County Stakes (Grade III) at Lexington on Friday, and his results will also determine placement in November.

The biggest news in the horse racing world from this past weekend came from Baltimore, as the filly Swiss Skydiver pulled off a significant upset and outraced Authentic to the finish line at the 145th running of the Preakness Stakes. She became just the sixth filly ever to win the Preakness, and the first since 2009. However, there were other big races going on, with a slate of graded stakes at Keeneland Race Course on Saturday and Sunday.

Preakness Stakes Recap: Swiss Skydiver Pulls off the Upset

Swiss Skydiver was the first filly in a Preakness since 2014, when Ria Antonia ran at Pimlico but came in dead last. The last filly to win at the Preakness was Rachel Alexandra, in 2009.

It was Thousand Words who ran out to the early lead, with Authentic breathing down his neck. It was near the end of the backstretch when Swiss Skydiver made her move, during the home stretch into a two-horse battle.

Authentic would have delivered trainer Bob Baffert a record eight wins as a Preakness Stakes trainer. Jesus’ Team paid off on long odds coming in third, with Art Collector, winner of the Blue Grass Stakes (Grade I) finishing in fourth place.

Ken McPeek is Swiss Skydiver’s trainer, and Robby Albarado was on board for the race. She entered the Preakness Stakes with +1100 odds and paid $25.40 to win on a $2 bet, along with $8.40 to place and $5.80 to show. She had won the Alabama Stakes (Grade I). She was expected to win the Kentucky Oaks in early September but came in second, as Shedaresthedevil pulled off the upset win.

Authentic had won the Kentucky Derby in a wire-to-wire duel with Tiz the Law, who had won the Belmont Stakes. Tiz the Law was held out of the Preakness to rest for the Breeders’ Cup Classic, as there was no Triple Crown up for grabs.

The 2020 Triple Crown, was different in multiple ways. All three races were delayed, although the Belmont Stakes faced the shortest delay and took place on June 20. The race was shortened to nine furlongs instead of the usual 12. There was a longer gap between each of the three races, adding to rest time, and the Preakness (which was the last race in the Triple Crown cycle for the first time ever) was run within rest range of the Breeders’ Cup for the first time. This was the first time the order of the races had been altered since the 1930s.

The next major event on the horse racing calendar is the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, which will include all the best horses in the world, instead of just the three-year-olds who go after the Triple Crown. As with the Triple Crown races, the Breeders’ Cup World Championships will also take place without spectators.

The 2020 Triple Crown cycle will finally come to an end today as the 145th Preakness Stakes is set for Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. The winner of the Belmont Stakes, Tiz the Law, is sitting this race out ahead of November’s Breeders’ Cup, but the Kentucky Derby winner, Authentic, will race and is the first choice ahead of Art Collector. There are several intriguing horses joining the fray at Pimlico.

Last Call: 2020 Preakness Stakes Review

Authentic is the favorite for a reason. His two workouts since the Kentucky Derby have been outstanding, with a five-furlong run in 59.20 and then, this past Monday, a four-furlong run in 47.60. Authentic’s trainer, Bob Baffert, has shown that he can make sure that his horses that win at Churchill Downs remain sharp ahead of the Preakness Stakes; this is one factor in his pursuit of the record of wins at Pimlico for a horse trainer.

Pneumatic remains an interesting sleeper, especially if you take into account the fact that the Preakness Stakes is happening four and a half months later than it usually does on the calendar. Looking at horses that are improving right now can make a smart choice when thinking about horses finishing in the money. He came in fourth at the Belmont Stakes on June 20 but improved to a victory in the Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth Park.

Art Collector missed the Kentucky Derby as a late scratch due to a minor hoof injury. He has won all four of the races that he has entered this season, running away from Swiss Skydiver at the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes. Some argue that Art Collector is a level below Authentic, but there were people making that argument at Churchill Downs about Authentic being below Tiz the Law, and we saw how that turned out.

Thousand Words is a bit of an enigma due to a series of issues that have happened shortly ahead of races. He flipped in the paddock ahead of the Kentucky Derby and needed to be scratched as a result. He was not injured, though, so he could look like he did at the Shared Belief Stakes, where he won over Honor A.P. I’m not sure he offers enough value for a pick to win, though.
