PREAKNESS 2020 SPECIAL: LATEST ODDS REVIEW

preakness-stakes-2020-betting-odds

We’re just 11 days away from the 2020 edition of the Preakness Stakes from Pimlico Park in Baltimore. This year, thanks to the chaos wreaked by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Preakness serves as the final leg in the Triple Crown, which will not have a 2020 winner thanks to Authentic coming away with the win at the Kentucky Derby, upsetting Tiz the Law, who had won the Belmont Stakes back in June. Even so, the last leg of the Triple Crown will still offer plenty of intrigue.

You might well be wondering, of course, just where Tiz the Law is. On Tuesday, his owners announced that he would not run in the Preakness on October 3. The pending rematch between Tiz the Law and Authentic had provided much of the drama heading into next Saturday’s race. Barclay Tagg, Tiz the Law’s trainer, decided to opt out and allow Tiz the Law to get more rest ahead of the Breeders’ Cup Classic on November 7.

There was a bit of tension between the horse’s owner, Jack Knowlton, and Tagg at first, as Knowlton had made a statement that he wanted Tiz the Law to take on Authentic again after seeing Tiz the Law fail in an attempt to catch Authentic down the stretch. However, Tagg did not see any reason to run in Baltimore since there is no chance for him to win a Triple Crown this year.

This turns the intrigue in the race to the contest between Authentic and Art Collector, who was scratched at the Kentucky Derby due to a minor foot injury. He would have been the second choice in the morning odds but ended up sitting out. It will be interesting to see if one of the top choices wins, or if the lack of urgency without a Triple Crown leads to a third winner in the three signature races.

MAGIC ATTITUDE IS PURE MAGIC AT BELMONT OAKS + PREAKNESS ODDS UPDATE

0
magic-attitude-belmont-oaks-2020

The North American debut for Magic Attitude was a total success: After a slow start, the 3-year-old European filly caught up with rival Antoinette and after a great turn of foot, won her first Belmont Oaks trophy with 2 ¼-length difference.

Galileo’s daughter didn’t have it easy crossing the Atlantic Ocean to reach trainer Arnaud Delacour’s facilities in Eastern USA: she had been a little bit sick during the journey, yet she didn’t show any early signs of future defeat. After applying some relaxation therapy on the 3-year-old filly upon arrival, she started showing signs of betterment, which crystalized in Saturday’s confident victory, earned by the same stoutness and determination shown in french races in the previous months.

LATE SPRINGER

Maybe Magic Attitude got a little TOO relaxed, but the beginning of the Belmont Oaks Invitational was definitely a bit slow, however, after a first turn change, and in a clear show of the same talents that had raised brows in the old continent, she picked up on her stride and managed to defeat Antoinette for her first American Grade 1 win ever. “She duplicated what she had been doing in the morning in the afternoon… This is what she showed in France, a great turn of foot!” said trainer Delacour minutes after the end of the race.

Magic Attitude makes her American debut with an even (100 ml ) price.

Florida’s own Key Biscayne made it third to the finish line of Saratoga Oaks; she’s currently listed at +800 ml, while French-born Neige Blanch (+500 ml), trained by Leonard Powell, enters the race after also winning a Group 3 race back in France during the summer. MORE HORSES PROBABLE TO MATCH AUTHENTIC AT PREAKNESS STAKES

The 2020 calendar of Triple Crown races got messed up big-time by the Covid-19 pandemic, forcing new late dates upon the classic circuit of American horseracing. Just a couple of weeks ago we witnessed Authentic winning the Kentucky Derby before empty grandstands, and now, we’re gearing up for the Preakness Stakes, set for upcoming October 3rd, 2020.

But Authentic isn’t the only horse with a clear choice for Preakness: five additional horses are nearly & fully signed-up for the event, while four others fall into the “maybe” category.

Join us for a quick review of the latest entry tales for Preakness, and don’t forget to check out JAZZSports’ extensive Racebook when you’re done. Sign up today and gain instant access to fresh race odds, pool prizes and lots of other horse-betting options.

New Rumors – The Probables

Trainer Bret Calhoun expressed recently his full support for Mr Big News to enter the race, and all signs point to certain participation (Mr Big News made it to third place at the latest Kentucky Derby), meanwhile, Pneumatic, Thousand Words, Art Collector and new-comer Happy Saver are all likely to also snatch a post position. Happy Saver emerged probably after winning the Federico Tesio Stakes at Laurel Park some days ago; Thousand Word and Art Collector simply can’t let this opportunity pass them by, as they failed to make it to Churchill Downs last time.

Maybe Horses

Tiz the Law’s ownership seems to be taking a more cautious approach to the race: according to statements made to the New York Racing Association recently, the decision on whether Tiz the Last will make it to Preakness or not, fully depends on the outcome of a “work weekend.” Ny Traffic, Dr Post and Mystic Guide haven’t made up their minds yet either.

King Guillermo is expected to miss out entirely.

A MIGHTY HEART CAPTURED HEARTS AND QUEEN’S PLATE $1MILLION PRIZE

0
mighty-heart-horse

It wasn’t meant to be, but longshot Mighty Heart ran swiftly and gracefully, reaching the end first with a 2:01.98 time and defeating Queen’s Plate former favorite Clayton.

Mighty Heart and jockey Daisuke Fukomoto secured the $1,000.000 prize with a strategy that seemed both risky and natural at the same time. Mighty Heart had an energized start to the race, which Fukumoto failed in mitigating: “He was very sharp so I just let him go. I tried to calm him a little bit after the wire… he kept going, he didn’t stop there

Ultimately, the one-eyed horse’s kept strong, and was able to overcome favorite Clayton & the rest of the competition.

Mighty Heart suffered an accident that cost him an eye during his foal years, but this didn’t appear to hinder him from meeting his destiny, moreover, Mighty Heart has proven to all that have come in contact with him that his name is more than deserved: “He knew it was a big race, that’s why he was a sharp. I am lucky. He only has one eye but he’s got a big heart, a mighty heart” commented Fukimoto at the end of the race.

RISKY STRATEGY

Running to the early lead wasn’t part of Fukumotos or Carroll’s plans, far from it: “I was watching the fractions and I’m thinking ‘You’re maybe going a little quick out there. Back it off a little” said Carroll about her initial reactions, “But the horse seemed to be running along pretty easily.” remarked Carroll, and so, Mighty Heart ended up with the victory and the audiences rejoiced in the upset.

This is Carroll’s third win at the Queen’s Plate and the first-time ever for Fukumoto.  Mighty Hearts pre-race odds had kept around 13/1.

It’s time to turn all our attention to our neighbors up-north, as the famed Queen’s Plate Stakes take place tomorrow (Sept. 12th) joined by many online-based events. The Instagram broadcast is scheduled to begin sometime around 12:00 pm ET (via @WoodbineTV), with the Queen’s Plate Stakes race listed for 4:30 pm ET post time.

Queen’s Plate & Bison City Stakes

The 161st edition of the Queen’s Plate had been originally set for June 24th, however, the pervasiveness of the Covid-19 pandemic forced the organizers to move the event to the current date. Despite Canada’s partial reopening of public spaces of recent days, Woodbine will not yet host any guests in its stands for Saturday’s races.

The 8th race of the Queen’s Plate full-day of racing activities presents a very interesting option for the bettors, with a powerful list of competitors who never trail too far behind the other.

According to racing pundits, both #1 Ballroom of Mars & #7 Infinite Patience draw most of the attention of bettors, due to their high winning prospects and alluring payout promise. Infinite Patience had once competed at the Woodbine Oaks, rushing to the front with incredible speed, but ultimately succumbing to a crowded last stretch; he might just make it “ok” this time around!

TRIPLE CROWN UPDATE: EARLY PREAKNESS ODDS

0
Pimlicoracing

After so many delays caused by the infamous Covid-19 pandemic, the Triple Crown series is finally picking up speed: Bob Baffert’s Authentic took massive favorite Tiz the Law down on a last stretch showdown during last Saturday’s Kentucky Derby, and to nobody’s shock, he is now listed by some daring international racebooks as the likely winner of the upcoming Preakness Stakes.

Naturally, due to the rescheduling of The Triple Crown dates this year, you might feel a little lost about their 2020 order: The Belmont Stakes took place first (June 20th), followed by the classic Kentucky Derby on Sept. 5th, and now, the 145th edition of the Preakness Stakes will close the racing cycle on October 3rd.

Lest we forget: make sure to check out JAZZSports.ag’s betting board regularly for their upcoming odds on the Preakness Stakes 2020.  You will find varied betting pools, match-up odds and many other alternatives to spice up your racing season.

Authentic Leads Early Odds

Some may think it a bit too early to consider Preakness prices, but international odds broker Oddschecker has already released its early list of prices, which you can see partially in the chart appearing right below.

Preakness Stakes 2020 Early Odds *

TOP 5 Positions

NameEarly PriceStatus
Authentic+120Probable
Tiz the Law+250Unlikely
Art Collector+450Probable
Honor A.P.+600Unlikely
Thousand Words+1000Probable

*Odds are subject to change.

No more than 13 horses are expected to ultimately run at the Preakness, but, as the post positions cannot yet be confirmed, early odds listings might push up 32 betting options for the player to consider. Tiz the Law is one such improbable betting choice, but his commendable performances throughout the year have convinced many pundits that he will be dropping by on Oct. 3rd.

Even though listed with a +600 money line price, Honor A.P. is highly likely to miss the race; King Guillermo, Thousand Words and Art Collector are all expected to enter the race, as long as their health permits it.

Betting on Authentic

We understand some players may think Authentic a good early price, especially those bettors prone to expect repeats during the Triple Crown races, however, the returning price isn’t as attractive just yet (+120). It might just improve as the next few weeks come by, which is why we recommend to hold off for now, while the positions are more fully confirmed.

RACING UPDATE: AUTHENTIC KEEPS PACE TO BEAT TIZ THE LAW & WIN 146TH KENTUCKY DERBY

0
authentic_kd_winner

It is now a well-known fact: Authentic is the absolute winner of the 146th edition of the famed Kentucky Derby race. Saturday afternoon saw some of the finest horses in the racing circuit compete for the most coveted jewel of the Triple Crown series of thoroughbred challenges, resulting in a victory which neither shocked nor surprised racing experts.

Race-favorite Tiz the Law came too close to victory. His win had been foretold by most racing pundits on the web after his Belmont Stakes success, however, the predictions were not to be, as Tiz the Law failed to give his last usual burst to overcome Authentic’s advantage, which resulted in a final difference of 1 ¼ lengths between to first two places. Mr. Big News finished third, and Honor A.P. managed to overcome a poor start to make a very decent 4th place.

A Different Type of Derby

Bob Baffert’s joy over his sixth Derby win was clear; the famous trainer achieved something no other had before him, but part of the eve’s excitement had been eaten away by the empty sight of the Churchill Hill grandstands, which would normally showcase the highest fashion efforts and the oddest choices in headwear by stylish ladies, plus the sheer energy behind America’s biggest yearly race. The KD’s official post time was 7 pm ET.

Kentucky Derby Payouts

Authentic’s win, however, did not represent a huge upset for the betting houses, as he had been positioned as second best long before the remaining race positions had been fixed. According to trusted racebook JAZZ Sports, the payout numbers are as appear on the table right below:

IT’S FINALLY HERE! LAST ODDS CHECK-UP BEFORE THE KENTUCKY DERBY

0
kentucky-derby-sept-5-2020

It’s four months later than its usual slot during the first weekend in May thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the 2020 Kentucky Derby is finally set to take place on Saturday, September 5. Tiz the Law is the heavy favorite after winning the Belmont Stakes, back in June, and dominating three races since then.

Let’s take a look at the latest odds, courtesy of JAZZ Sports, for each of the horses, as well as our last thoughts on the race.

The horses will slide over one position, so Finnick The Fierce will run out of gate #2, and so on. No horse has ever won the Kentucky Derby out of gate #17, where Tiz The Law will start, but it’s also worth noting that Churchill Downs has a new gate system installed this year, so those who are curious about the “jinx” factor of the gate may not worry as much about the gate assignment. In an interview with Fox News, Tiz The Law’s trainer, Barclay Tagg, said, “Well, I like being on the outside. I didn’t particularly want to be out that far, but it’s what we have. He seems to handle everything that gets thrown at him, so we have to leave it up to him.”

The course record for the Kentucky Derby, 1:59.40, has stood since 1973, when Secretariat thundered down the track. The 2019 winner, Country House, posted a comparatively pedestrian time of 2:03.93, although he did not cross the finish line first. Maximum Security crossed first but received a disqualification for interference.

Finnick The Fierce is a particularly interesting sleeper, as he is the only horse in this field that has ever handed Tiz The Law a loss, edging him out at the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes last November. Here are some other statistics to consider as you make your final picks:

·       Of the last 28 Kentucky Derby winners, 26 finished with a closing speed of no more than 38 seconds or faster and also posted a Brisnet Speed Figure of at least 96 in their last prep race.

·       The majority of the last 28 winners also registered a Dosage Index (speed to stamina on the basis of pedigree) of 3 or higher – and a layoff ahead of the Kentucky Derby of no more than six weeks.

Of those metrics, Max Player, South Bend and Tiz The Law are the only ones that fit them all.

The biggest horse racing event of the year is finally here – enjoy your wagering!

WEEKEND BETTING: LONGINES KENTUCKY OAKS, 2020 KENTUCKY DERBY

0
kentucky_derby_146

Finally, the biggest horse racing weekend of the year is upon us, as Churchill Downs is prepared to host the 146th Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve on Saturday – with the Longines Kentucky Oaks coming the day before. Saratoga Race Course has a full slate of its own on Saturday.

Take a look at the schedule, along with previews of the Kentucky Derby and the Kentucky Oaks, with odds courtesy of JAZZ Sports.

8 Hopeful Growth +3000

Swiss Skydiver could have run in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, but her trainer opted to keep her in the fillies’ race. She has won four graded stakes races, all on different courses, and she ran away from the rest of the field in the Alabama Stakes (Grade I). She was the runner-up at the Blue Grass Stakes, against a field of males.

Gamine looked ridiculously fast in easy wins at the Acorn Stakes (Grade I) and the Test Stakes (Grade I). There was talk about her entering the Kentucky Derby out of Bob Baffert’s stable after injuries to Nadal and Charlatan. The 1 1/8 miles of the Kentucky Oaks present the only real question for her, as her big wins came in races featuring just one turn.

Speech easily won the Ashland Stakes (Grade I) at Keeneland, and she has run the closest to Gamine of any of the horses in this field, losing an allowance at Oaklawn Park to Gamine by just a neck.

Despite the chaos of the horse racing year, Tiz The Law has emerged as the heavy favorite, and for good reason. He won the Belmont Stakes back in June, and he has dominated three races since then, all Grade I stakes. If he can win at Churchill Downs, it would just be the Preakness next month remaining in the way of his winning a Triple Crown, joining 13 other horses in that rare honor.

It is interesting that the top three betting choices have the three outside positions. Just one slip at the beginning could prove crucial to the outcome. There’s a reason why Triple Crowns are so rare. This would have been an even more interesting race had Art Collector not scratched the day before the draw. Even so, there will be plenty of intrigue coming from the outside.
