TIZ THE LAW: CAN HE REALLY LIVE UP TO THE EXPECTATIONS?

0
Mundaye-Call

If you’re relatively new to following horse racing, then it might seem inevitable that Tiz The Law will follow up his win at the Belmont Stakes and his dominant summer with an easy stroll through the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. After all, the favorite won six Kentucky Derbys in a row, starting with Orb in 2013 and ending with Justify in 2018 (who rolled to a Triple Crown).

Last year’s mishap, Maximum Security, crossed the finish line first but had that result overturned after a 22-minute steward’s inquiry. He was found to have swerved into Long Range Toddy and War of Will’s path, and was disqualified. The winner ended up being Country House, who paid 65-1 odds and then never ran another race. He paid on the second-highest odds of any Kentucky Derby winner ever, behind Donerail, who made good on 91-1 odds in 1913. But the path that Tiz The Law faces isn’t guaranteed by any means.

Take a look at our thoughts about his chances…and the Thursday horse racing pool action courtesy of JAZZ Sports.

Horse Racing News: Can Tiz the Law Win the Triple Crown??

This will already be a strange Kentucky Derby for other reasons. It’s taking place four months later than usual, pushed back to Labor Day weekend. The stands, which normally hold 150,000 fans, will be empty.

The long wait between the Belmont Stakes and the Kentucky Derby has given horses chances to enter more races — but also chances to put more miles on their legs, and increase the probability of injury. We know more about these horses than we do about the horses that usually show up at Churchill Downs each May, because they’ve got a bigger race resume, but each race brings the possibility of injury.

There’s also the possibility of a slip, a poor start, even a collision that the stewards do not deem a foul. Those things happen frequently, and they can send favorites to losses. Tiz The Law has not had any of those mishaps thus far, but they happen more often than people expect. This is why so few dominant horses end up winning that elusive Triple Crown.

Tiz The Law does come to Churchill Downs with a big head of steam, of course. After the Belmont Stakes win, he won easily at a couple of prep stakes races in Florida and dominated the field at the Travers Stakes, on August 8 at Saratoga.

So if his fortune holds, Tiz The Law has what it takes to win at Churchill Downs and then again at the Preakness Stakes. However, he still has two races to win.

POST POSITIONS ARE IN! 2020 KENTUCKY DERBY + ODDS

0
Churchill_Downs

We now have the post positions for the 2020 edition of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve. There will be 18 horses taking part in one of the premier events in horse racing, delayed since May 2 thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. There will be no fans in the stands, thanks to ongoing concerns about social distancing and possible community spread, but the Triple Crown will be one leg closer to finishing.

Let’s take a look at the field and consider how post position might play a role, and check out the latest odds to win for the 2020 KD, courtesy of JAZZSports.ag.

Kentucky Derby Update: The Post Positions Are In

Tiz the Law drew -167 odds as the favorite in the morning line after drawing post 17. Those are the lowest odds for any early choice since 1989. There will be three top contenders coming from the outside, as Authentic (+800) will sit in slot 18, on the very outside. Honor A.P., who won the Runhappy Santa Anita Derby (Grade I) on June 6, drew post 16 and had initial odds at +500 after the post placements.

The presence of drama right before and after the draw is nothing new for the Kentucky Derby. A year ago, Omaha Beach scratched from Churchill Downs one day after the draw had taken place. This year, Art Collector scratched on the morning of the draw.

Scratch time for the race will be 9:00 am ET on Friday, September 4, and the race’s post time is 7:02 pm ET on Saturday, November 5. You can catch coverage from NBC all afternoon on Saturday, running from 2:30 pm ET to 7:30 pm.

Churchill  Downs installed a new starting gate with 20 places. With only 18 horses set to go, there will be no horses in slots 1 or 20. So drawing position 17, for example, puts Tiz the Law in gate 18. That could help from the perspective of the jinx; after all, no horse has come from position 17 to win in any of the previous 145 editions of the Kentucky Derby. The 17th position used to be significantly further outside with the previous gate.

Tiz the Law won the Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets (Grade I) easily and also won the Curlin Florida Derby (Grade I). It is trainer Barclay Tagg’s second Kentucky Derby; in 2003, he trained Funny Cide, who won at Churchill Downs and then at the Preakness Stakes (Grade I), completing two legs of the Triple Crown. In 2003, Funny Cide drew position 5.

Finnick the Fierce drew position 1 (so he will be running out of gate 2). He came in third in the second division of the Arkansas Derby (Grade I) back in May, with a 2-1-2 record in nine career starts. In his best races, he has come from off the pace, which could work well for him. Ny Traffic drew the 15th post position, which will allow him to chase the lead from the outside as well.

COULD BAFFERT MAKE IT TO SIX? A LOOK AT THE LEGENDARY TRAINER + ODDS

0
Justify_and_Bob_Baffert

We’re now five days away from the 146th Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve, and one trainer in particular has a chance to put just one more bullet on a resume that is already the stuff of legend in horse racing. Bob Baffert had two top horses already ruled out for Churchill Downs, as Nadal and Charlatan will both be unable to run. However, he has two other horses in the field for Saturday’s race, as Authentic and Thousand Words will be in the field.

Can either of them get by the big favorite, Tiz the Law?

Could Bob Baffert Make it Six? A Look at a Legendary Kentucky Derby Trainer

There is already a trainer with six victories at the Kentucky Derby – Ben “Plain Ben” Jones. However, Baffert already holds the record for most wins in Triple Crown races (including the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes) with 15, one ahead of the mark previously held by D. Wayne Lukas. He trained American Pharaoh in 2015 and Justify in 2018, giving him two Triple Crown winners. Only one other trainer, “Sunny” Jim Fitzsimmons, has that many Triple Crowns.

Lukas had dominated horse racing during the 1980s and 1990s, until Baffert emerged as an elite trainer. However, Baffert will have a difficult time getting that win this weekend. Authentic looks like he will likely emerge as the fourth choice for bettors, and Thousand Words will be among the big longshots.

As with many trainers and competitors in other sports that have sustained periods of greatness, there is an aura of controversy around Baffert as well. Charlatan and Gamine, a Baffert-trained filly who has enough points for the Kentucky Derby but will run in the Kentucky Oaks instead, both tested positive for lidocaine, used as a skin-applied pain numbing agent, and a banned substance for horses. Baffert was given a suspension as a result of the tests, but that suspension remains under appeal. Baffert’s response is that an assistant trainer was wearing a skin patch with lidocaine that came into contact with both horses.

The problem of drugs in horse racing had hit the press with some vigor right before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the vast majority of international sport (and took over the news cycle). In March, U.S. federal authorities put charges on 27 people with four indictments with respect to shipping and administering banned drugs to horses, for the purpose of having them race beyond what they could do naturally. One of those with charges was Jason Servis, who had trained Maximum Security, who was disqualified after winning the 2019 Kentucky Derby for what stewards determined was an illegal maneuver.

The situation with Baffert is separate from those indictments and is nothing near the scale of what Servis is accused of. And for now, he is looking to Saturday’s race as a chance for one of his horses to emerge as the winner to a significant payoff for bettors – and to get that sixth victory at Churchill Downs.

WEEKEND REPORT: C Z ROCKET BREEZES TO VICTORY @ PAT O’BRIEN STAKES + MORE

0
C_Z_Rocket

This past weekend, we had the Pat O’Brien Stakes from Del Mar and the Sword Dancer Stakes and the Forego Stakes, both from Saratoga Race Course. The rest of this week, we’re focusing on the 2020 Kentucky Derby – today, take a look at a quick recap of the weekend action.

If you can’t help yourself, just down to the bottom for some scoop on special KD betting options

Weekend Racing Recap

Saturday, August 29

Pat O’Brien Stakes

Six-year-old gelding C Z Rocket breezed to victory on Saturday at the Pat O’Brien Stakes, giving him four consecutive wins. When Tom Kagele purchased him on April 30, he had dropped three straight races – by a total of 37 ¾ lengths. It had been over a year since his last victory.

Ridden by Flavien Prat, C Z Rocket was in third place up the backstretch. The leader, Law Abidin Citizen, had set fairly pedestrian fractions of 23.10, 46.04, and 1:10.06. CZ Rocket pulled even with the leader, along with Flagstaff, and then the three took off to the finish, until C Z Rocket pulled ahead to win by half a length, with a final seven-furlong time of 1:22.25 on a fast track. Flagstaff came in second, followed by Law Abidin Citizen. C Z Rocket’s streak now includes a win in a May 25 claimer at Churchill Downs; a June 21 claimer at the same track; a July 12 optional claimer at Keeneland, and now the Pat O’Brien Stakes.

Sword Dancer Stakes

Channel Maker led from start to finish in this 12-furlong race on the inner turf. A six-year-old gelding, Channel Maker enjoyed the softer surface and now has an automatic entry into the Breeders’ Cup Turf on November 7 at Keeneland Race Course.

This was Channel Maker’s third Sword Dancer Stakes. He was the runner-up in 2018 and came in fourth a year ago. This time around, his jockey, Manny Franco, drove him out to the lead, finishing his first quarter in 25.10. Marzo was in second, just to the inside, and Corelli was in third. Channel Maker held a lead of a length and a half through the first crossing of the finish line. Channel Maker hit the mile in 1:42.33. After that, Corelli made a run along the rail, and Aquaphobia made a late charge as Marzo faded. At the stretch call, Channel Maker led by 5 ½ lengths and added a quarter-length by the finish, with a final recorded time of 2:34.86. Aquaphobia was second, followed by Corelli, Pedro Cara and Marzo.

Forego Stakes

Win Win Win took advantage of a chance to run at a shorter distance (seven furlongs), and it paid off big-time, as he roared to his first graded stakes victory. Ridden by Javier Castellano, he started out last in a field of 11 horses, 16 ¼ lengths off the lead, and rallied to win – all in the middle of a driving rain. A year ago, Win Win Win had settled for ninth and seventh places at the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, respectively, so the shorter distance appears to have paid off for him.

SATURDAY SPECIAL: THE ODD CASE OF SHIRL’S SPEIGHT

0
Shirls-Speight

In just another unusual story from an unusual horse racing year, Shirl’s Speight faces an unusual journey to make it to Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby on September 5. Based in Canada, he and his trainer, Roger Attfield, face difficulties just getting to Louisville. Border issues due to restrictions that Canadian government has placed on travel to and from the United States mean that Attfield can’t just drive, as he normally would. Instead, he has to change planes several times. But this isn’t going to faze Attfield, an 80-year-old legend in horse racing. Take a look at Shirl’s Speight’s quest for the roses.

Shirl’s Speight is currently priced at +3500 at mega-racebook JAZZ Sports. Make sure to check out all their betting pools, match-up odds and other interesting options for the Kentucky Derby

No Points? No Problem! Shirl’s Speight and the 2020 Kentucky Derby

Shirl’s Speight has raced two times in his career, neither of those on dirt, so the Kentucky Derby will be his dirt debut. His racing has earned him precisely zero points to qualify for the Derby. However, the 20-horse field is looking light, as a few of the top three-year-olds are either hurt or just looking for other opportunities (such as Dr Post, the Belmont Stakes runner-up who may forego Churchill Downs and re-engage with Tiz the Law at the Preakness Stakes instead).

Shirl’s Speight’s owner is Charles Fipke, and he has tried to get a horse into the Kentucky Derby without any qualification points before. It happened in 2015, when Tale of Verve was eligible for the Derby but could not crack the top 20. He did run in the Preakness Stakes that year, coming in second to American Pharaoh.

So how did Shirl’s Speight do in those two races? He won his maiden outing, a seven-furlong affair on the turf at Woodbine – and he won by eight lengths. On July 25, he won the Marine (Grade III), also at Woodbine, this time covering 1 1/16 miles on an all-weather surface, by 2 ¾ lengths.

According to Attfield, Shirl’s Speight has not done more racing because of some difficulties with bone bruising during and after his two-year-old training career.

There have only been five horses in the Kentucky Derby since 1937 with two or fewer career races on their resume. China Visit, racing in 2000, had the best finish of the five, coming in sixth. Justify, though, only had three career races before winning at Churchill Downs in 2018 – and then completing the Triple Crown.

Shirl’s Speight’s sire was Speightstown, whose other offspring have shown poor stamina in longer outings. However, his dam, Perfect Shirl, took first in 2011 at the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf, over 1 3/8 miles, paying on 27/1 odds.

Attfield has not brought a horse to Churchill Downs since 1995, when he brought Talkin Man, who came in 12th. However, he is in the horse racing halls of fame in Canada and the United States, and he has had three horses win the Canadian Triple Crown.

So if you’re looking for an intriguing alternative to Tiz the Law (-120 ml), this is a horse that has not yet faced (and lost to) Tiz the Law.

Saturday’s Pat O’Brien Stakes offers a guaranteed slot in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile for the winner, going seven furlongs on the dirt at Del Mar. Flagstaff has only won one race in four starts in 2020, but he had a tough opponent in McKinzie in his last race. In April, at the Count Fleet Stakes at Oaklawn Park, Flagstaff was mounting a furious comeback before coming up just short. His win this year came at the San Carlos Stakes at Santa Anita.

Law Abidin Citizen has run at Del Mar six times and has yet to win. His best career race came here as well, as his last race here was the Bing Crosby Stakes (Grade I), where he came in third. In 27 races overall, Law Abidin Citizen has two wins in Grade III stakes.

Giant Expectations makes his first start since the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, where he had a disappointing race. In the 2019 Pat O’Brien Stakes, he came in second, and he took first three years ago.

8                       Sadler’s Joy                                 +250

The winner of this race gets an automatic entry into the Breeders’ Cup Turf. Sadler’s Joy crossed the line first in the Bowling Green Stakes (Grade I) on August 1 at Saratoga, but a steward’s inquiry ended up dropping him to fourth place. The win was awarded to Cross Border, who has won all five of his starts at Saratoga. However, the only time he won against a field of this quality came via that disqualification at the Bowling Green Stakes.

Channel Maker has gone more than a year without a win, but he has won more than $2.2 million in earnings over his career and is at a level where he should contend in Grade I stakes.

Whitmore comes in with 35 career wins and a lifetime earnings total of more than $3.1 million, and he looks to become just the third horse to win the Forego Stakes more than once. Groovy (1986-87) and Quick Call (1988-89) are the other two. Whitmore won this race in 2018 and has six graded stakes victories: the Count Fleet Sprint Handicap (Grade III) three times, the Maryland Sprint (Grade III) and the Phoenix at Keeneland (Grade II). He has also won four straight Hot Springs at Oaklawn, dating back to 2017. His last race was at the Alfred G. Vanderbilt (Grade I) at Saratoga, where he was the runner-up to Volatile.

Mind Control finished third at the Alfred G. Vanderbilt in his last race. He won the Hopeful (Grade I) in September 2018 as an underdog and won the H. Allen Jerkens (Grade I) at Saratoga in 2019. His last training workout saw him roll through five furlongs in 1:01.20 on August 22. He has five graded stakes wins in his career.

FAST TO THE FINISH: ANALYZING TRENDS IN KENTUCKY DERBY WINNERS

0
road_to_kentucky_derby

Coming up with the right odds (and the right betting choices) for the Kentucky Derby is an operation that has a lot of complexity. You have a field of 20 three-year-old horses who have not been raced all that heavily, going 1 ¼ miles, which for some of them is their first race at that distance. There are some years when the favorite breezes to victory – and there are some years when shocking results happen. This was the case a year ago, when Country House won despite 65/1 odds thanks to a disqualification. In 2020, though, the race comes about four months later than usual thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, and so the horses this year have more experience than normal. However, one metric that has helped in the past and will help again is the ability to finish fast at a distance of 1 1/8 miles.

Let’s take a look at how this has worked out historically. Don’t forget to check the latest odds for winners in this year’s Kentucky Derby at JAZZ Sports.

Tiz the Law is the emphatic leader in this metric as well, 0.23 seconds ahead of the rest of the field, so if you’ve been wondering if Tiz the Law really is a lock, this is another number to add to his resume. It is worth noting, though, that the Belmont Stakes – shortened to 1 1/8 miles this year – was run with just one turn, instead of two. Most 1 1/8 mile races have a second turn, and it is harder to deliver that fast final fraction with the second turn. However, at the Travers Stakes on August 8, Tiz the Law finished the last 3/8 in :36.76, winning by 5 ½ lengths. So the number is convincing.

2020 KENTUCKY DERBY CONTENDERS: YOUR UPDATE WITH 10 DAYS TO GO

0

We’re about a week and a half away from the 2020 Kentucky Derby, set for September 5 at Churchill Downs. The last chances for horses to earn points to qualify for the 20 slots in the race field have come and gone, and now we’re seeing the contenders’ workout reports. With 10 days to go before the second leg in this year’s Triple Crown, let’s take a quick look at the top contenders, and don’t forget to check out all the betting odds, pools and other action specials available at JAZZ Sports.ag.

Kentucky Derby Contenders: Your Update with 10 Days to Go

Tiz the Law remains the heavy favorite, and with good reason. He posted a :59.40 five-furlong workout on Sunday at Saratoga Race Course. The only real factor weighing against the favorite is the fact that his only loss has come at Churchill Downs. In all of his other starts, he has won – and won big. Current pool odds at JAZZ Sports: -120 ml

Art Collector has two victories on the main track at Churchill Downs in the spring of 2020. It’s worth noting that he has never raced longer than 1 1/8 miles, but he was bred for the extra furlong that he will find on September 5. His sire, Bernardini, won the Travers Stakes (Grade I) at 1 ¼ miles, and his dam, Distorted Legacy, earned a place in the Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes (Grade I) at the same distance. Current pool odds: +600 ml.

Honor A.P. rolled through five furlongs in :59.40 on August 15, and he ran the same distance in 1:00.20 on August 22, adding a sixth furlong in 12 seconds flat. Current pool odds: +850 ml.

Authentic will have John Velazquez as his rider, a two-time Derby champion, with wins in 2011 (Animal Kingdom) and 2017 (Always Dreaming). Current pool odds: +1000 ml.

Ny Traffic has yet to win any of his six stakes races. However, at the Haskell Stakes (Grade I), he mounted a furious rally and finished just a nose back over 1 1/8 miles. The extra distance at Churchill Downs could lead to an intriguing finish. Current pool odds: +1400 ml.

King Guillermo will come to Churchill Downs after a four-month layoff from the racing circuit. He won the Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby (Grade II) in his last race, and he has put up some sparkling times in his Churchill Downs workouts. It will be interesting to see how he races with the elite talent. Current betting odds: +2000 ml.

Caracaro ran five furlongs in 1:01 flat on Saturday morning at Saratoga Race Course, the time perhaps slowed a bit by the sloppy track on a rainy morning. However, the horse appeared comfortable despite the wet course. Current betting odds: +1700 ml.

Dr Post is not yet committed to the Kentucky Derby. He did finish third at the Haskell Stakes and was the runner-up at the Belmont Stakes (Grade I). On Friday, he ran five furlongs in 1:00.60 at Saratoga Race Course, which would make him competitive. Current pool odds: +3000 ml.

King-Guillermo-2020

On August 22, the exclusive training period for horses preparing for the Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby on September 4 and 5, respectively, opened at Churchill Downs. We saw King Guillermo, Honor A.P., Caracaro and Storm the Court all run through five furlongs at different courses, giving us insight into their possible progress toward the race for the roses. Kentucky Derby Update: August 22 Workout Report

King Guillermo performed his workout on the track as it was drying out from rain, and it was rated “fast” by the timers. He definitely came to run, zipping through the five furlongs in a rapid :58.20. His splits were :11.40, :23, :34.80 and :46.60, finishing six furlongs in 1:10.80 with Miguel Mena riding. Samy Camacho, based in Florida, will ride him on September 5.

Caracaro got in his workout at Saratoga Race Course, needing 1:01.02 for his five furlongs on a track that was sloppy after some rainstorms. His first quarter came in :25.60, with J.J. Delgado riding. His last race result was a runner-up finish at the Runhappy Travers Stakes (Grade I). The rains returned, and Tiz the Law was unable to get in his scheduled workout.

Honor A.P. completed his five-furlong workout at Del Mar in 1:00.20. His jockey, Mike Smith, was on hand for this exercise run; Smith was the one who rode Giacomo to a Kentucky Derby win in 2005, converting on 50-1 odds. His fractions were :12, :24, :36.20, and :47.60. He galloped out six furlongs, needing 1:12.20, and the seven-furlong time was 1:25.40. Honor A.P. is viewed as one of the strong second choices behind Tiz the Law at Churchill Downs.

Storm the Court also logged a five-furlong workout at Del Mar, rolling through in :59. That was a bit faster than the plan, but according to trainer Peter Eurton, the rider was not aware that the horse was going that fast, which Eurton described as “better than the alternative” in an interview.

Weekend Racing Recap

Saturday, August 22

TVG Pacific Classic Stakes

Maximum Security breezed to another win in a Grade I stakes on Saturday night. The only horse that pushed him hard was Sharp Samurai, a mount that has done well on turf but is new to elite races on a dirt track. However, the buzz around this race has less to do with the winner and more to do with the job that Victor Espinoza did riding Midcourt.

Coming out of the gate, Espinoza did not push Midcourt much. After the slow start, Midcourt ends up on the rail. Espinoza appears to give Midcourt a couple of nudges, but then he doesn’t prod the horse anymore. Maximum Security crosses over and takes position ahead of Midcourt, and from the video, it looks like Espinoza is almost holding Midcourt. Eventually, Midcourt settles into the pocket position, just off the front trio (Maximum Power, Sharp Samurai and Higher Power). Espinoza made this decision even though Midcourt has done best when he is the pacesetter.

Maximum Security ran his first quarter in 23.93 and the half-mile in 47.98, an easy pace for a horse of his quality. He finished six furlongs at 1:12.37 and pulled away from Sharp Samurai down the stretch, winning by three lengths, remaining the best older horse on dirt.

Del Mar Handicap

Red King rolled to victory on Saturday, making trainer Phil D’Amato’s resume even more impressive. He now has 14 winners in 60 starts at Del Mar since the horse racing season resumed, with just Peter Miller (15) ahead of him. The heavy favorite was United, and Red King paid $10.60 for a $2 win bet.

Red King picked up his seventh win in 28 starts (all turf races), finishing the 1 3/8 miles in 2:15.75. He made his move near the final turn and was able to keep United at bay, winning by a head.

Fourstardave Handicap

Halladay was the big winner on Saturday at the Fourstardave Handicap. He pushed into an early lead and settled in, posting a 47.19 half-mile and finishing six furlongs in 1:10.15. Got Stormy, the 2019 Fourstardave winner, mounted a challenge, but Halladay held her off and then won by 1 ¼ lengths. Casa Creed was third, 1 ¼ lengths behind Got Stormy and 1 ¼ lengths ahead of Emmaus.

This race marked Halladay’s first win in graded stakes. He ended up finishing his mile in 1:33.32 and paid $12.60 for a win bet.
