Colonel Liam Leading the Turf Field

The Pegasus turf field is being led by Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher’s Colonel Liam, who is coming in at +350. This will be his first graded stakes outing, with his first career start taking place less than a year ago.

Eclipse Award finalist Irad Ortiz Jr. will have the call as jockey.

The second choice at +450, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Twin Creek Racing Stables’ Largent is coming off a win in the Ft. Lauderdale Stakes (G2T) on Dec. 12 at Gulfstream.

At +800, The Elkstone Group’s Social Paranoia took an allowance optional claimer on Dec. 16 and won the Appleton Stakes (G3T) locally back in March. He will be another big name to watch out for in the field.

This will be a highly competitive race, as four of the 12 entries are one-time grade 1 winners. Those names are Next Shares, Storm the Court, Aquaphobia, and Say the Word.

Knicks Go Tops Pegasus World Cup Field

The biggest name coming into this race, one of the bigger weekend graded horse races, is the +250 favorite Knicks Go. Owned by Korea Racing Authority and trained by Brad Cox, the 5-year-old Paynter horse won the Big Ass Fans Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1).

Another big name to look out for is Will Farish’s homebred 2019 Runhappy Travers Stakes (G1) and Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) winner Code of Honor. Coming in at +450, he will break from Post 10 for trainer Shug McGaughey.

There are some question marks surrounding runners like Sleepy Eyes Todd, who is coming in at +800. While he is undoubtedly an impressive runner, having won races like the Charles Town Classic (G2) at the Pegasus’ 1 1/8-mile distance in August, he has yet to prove himself at the grade 1 level.

In his most recent start, he took the Mr. Prospector Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream in December.

A solid choice that could pay well at +1000 is Harpers First Ride. He took 10 of 17 career starts and has finished first or second in his last six races, including the Pimlico Special last fall.

There are also impressive races like the Smarty Jones Stakes running at Oaklawn Park.

** Before we continue with the article, make sure to check the latest odds and place your horse racing bets at the mega online sportsbook JazzSports.ag.

Oaklawn Park Race 8 – Smarty Jones S. ($150,000)

This is the highlight race on the Saturday card at Oaklawn. The event for 3-year-olds will cover one mile.

The field is being led by names like Steve Asmussen’s Cowan, who is the favorite, and Big Thorn. The Smarty Jones is the first of four Derby points prep races at Oaklawn.

Gulfstream Park Race 10 – (G3) W. L. McKnight S. ($150,000)

This is one of the lead-ups to the Pegasus World Cup races. The event for 4-year-olds and up will cover 1 1/2 miles on turf.

The field of 11 is being led by names like Sadler’s Joy as the favorite, Doswell, and Channel Cat.
Sadler’s Joy will break from Post 6, and the 8-year-old son of Kitten’s Joy is 7-4-11 from 34 lifetime starts with earnings of $2,654,160.

Gulfstream Park Race 11 – (G1) Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational S. ($1,000,000)

This is the first of the two big Pegasus races. The race is for 4-year-olds and up and covers 1 3/16 miles on turf.

The field has 12 runners, including grade 1 winners like Next Shares, Storm the Court, Aquaphobia, and Say the Word. The two top choices coming into the race are the Peter Miller-trained Anothertwistafate and the Phil D’Amato-trained Say the Word.

Anothertwistafate, who will break from Post 8, has a career record of 5-2-0 from 10 starts and earnings of $490,505. He is coming off a Jan. 2 victory in the San Gabriel Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita, registering an impressive 117 Speed Figure.

Gulfstream Park Race 12 – (G1) Pegasus World Cup Invitational S. ($3,000,000)

This is the highlight race of the Pegasus World Cup Series and on the card with a massive purse. It is open to 4-year-olds and up.

The field of 12 runners will cover 1 1/8 miles, and it is being topped by Big Ass Fans Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) winner Knicks Go. Owned by Korea Racing Authority and trained by Brad Cox, the 5-year-old Paynter horse is the morning-line favorite and will break from Post 4.

Another top challenger in the field is 2019 Runhappy Travers Stakes (G1) and Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) winner Code of Honor, who will break from Post 10 for trainer Shug McGaughey.

Some of the other names to watch out for are Sleepy Eyes Todd on the rail, Coastal Defense, Independence Hall, and Jesus’ Team.

PEGASUS WORLD CUP

0
PEGASUS WORLD CUP

This Saturday, Gulfstream Park will host the Pegasus World Cup Invitational, a Grade 1 stakes race that will feature a field of 12 horses looking to make horse racing news with the win. There is $3 million up for grabs in this race and we now know where each of the horses will start, with the post draw made on Wednesday. Let’s take a quick look at the draw, as well as a little about each horse.

Pegasus World Cup Entries

1. Sleepy Eyes Todd (8-1) – This is a horse on a nice run of form, winning 3 of its last 4 races, including a win at Gulfstream Park last month.

2. Coastal Defense (20-1) – This is a horse that has only had 9 races as he enters his 5th year. He has won a couple, but he has never won a stakes race.

3. Independence Hall (20-1) – Much better at shorter distances, where he has won 4 of 5, Independence Hall has failed to impress in 2-turn races.

4. Knicks Go (5-2) – With Mucho Gusto and Charlatan skipping this race, Knicks Go is now in as the morning line favorite on Saturday. Can he make horse racing news with the win?

5. Jesus’ Team (8-1) – One to watch here. He finished 3rd in the Preakness last season and 2nd behind Knicks Go in the Breeders Cup Mile, a race he started at 62-1.

6. Kiss Today Goodbye (10-1) – This is a horse that is rounding into form after a slow start to his career, winning back-to-back races ahead of this one.

7. Tax (5-1) – This will be the second straight appearance in the Pegasus for Tax, who finished 9th last year after stumbling out of the gate.

8. Harpers First Ride (10-1) – Another horse on a nice run of form. He has won 4 of his last 5, including a pair of smaller stakes races at Laurel Park.

9. Last Judgement (20-1) – He loves this distance, but he has also not had a ton of success in graded stakes races.

10. Code of Honor (9-2) – He has been on a bit of a poor run since a pair of graded stakes race wins in 2019. He did win his last time out at Gulfstream.

11. Mr. Freeze (15-1) – He had a nice win at the Fayette Stakes (G2) at Keeneland last October, but this is a bit of a step up.

12. Math Wizard (20-1) – He won the Pennsylvania Derby (G1) in 2019, but he has failed to get in the money in 6 of his last 7 races.

UPDATED ODDS AS OF JAN. 20, 2021

Road to the Kentucky Derby – Updated Odds as of Jan. 20, 2021

Updated odds: We are slowly but surely moving along the Road to the Kentucky Derby, with new horses entering the future betting pool, while other cement and improve their position. Let’s take a look at some of the changes to the Kentucky Derby odds at JazzSports.ag

Concert Tour 75/1 to 20/1

Concert Tour lived up to the hype in his first race at Santa Anita, leading from the off and breezing to a 3 ½ length uncontested win.

Bezos 80/1 to 25/1
The fact that this horse is seeing his odds shorten despite not yet running in a race tells you all that you need to know about this colt out of Empire Maker and A.P. Indy. Expect to see him get his first start soon.

Proxy 125/1 to 65/1
Proxy got off to a rocky start at the Lecomte Stakes, one of the prep races in the Road to the Kentucky Derby, but finished strong to come in second behind Midnight Bourbon. He will be tackling longer distances in upcoming races.

Candy Man Rocket Not on List to 75/1
Candy Man Rocket put in a much better showing in his second race, breaking his maiden over 6 furlongs at Gulfstream Park a couple of weeks ago. It seems that the sloppy track in his first race may not have been to his liking.

Martini Blu Not on List to 125/1
Martini Blu sprung the upset to get the win over Dream Keeper in his first start at Hawthorne Park. He is now at Oaklawn and will run in the Smarty Jones Stakes, a Derby prep race on opening day this Friday.

Pregame Not listed to 125/1
Pregame finished 3rd in his first race at Churchill Downs back in November, which is not at al bad when you consider that he started the race at 15/1.

Moonlight Strike Not listed to 150/1
We will next see Moonlight Strike at the Smarty Jones this Friday at Oaklawn. He made the betting list after winning consecutive races at Gulfstream Park and will almost certainly see his odds shorten if he turns in a good performance this weekend.

CALIFORNIA TRAINERS HEADING TO OAKLAWN PARK

CALIFORNIA TRAINERS HEADING TO OAKLAWN PARK

Horse Racing News – California Trainers Heading to Oaklawn Park

Oaklawn Park has always been a popular spot for California trainers and their horses, but with the uncertainty of racing in Southern California during the pandemic, it feels like a bit of a mass exodus this season. Golden Gate Field made horse racing news when they did finally re-open last week, but it came at a time when many trainers had already made the decision to take their horses to Oaklawn.

It is not a huge surprise to see this move for a variety of reasons, one of which is that a pair of California trainers landed in the top 10 in the standings there last season. The new season at Oaklawn Park is set to begin on Friday, January 22, with a total of 57 races days on the calendar.

Trainer John Sadler arrived at Oaklawn with his horses this past weekend, and he will be looking to improve on what was a strong meet the last time out. He finished in 5th in the trainer standings in his last season at Oaklawn, delivering 15 winners during that meet. He will have competition from another California based trainer, with Jerry Hollendorfer also taking horses to Oaklawn.

Hollendorfer also had a good season at Oaklawn last time out, finishing in the top 10 in the trainer standings. He is upping his presence this season, as he is taking 40 horses to the meet, which will include seven horses from his newest client, Frank Stronach. With that in mind, Holldendorfer has the potential to make horse racing news with another strong performance at Oaklawn Park this season.

It is a solid group of horses that Stronach plans on sending to Arkansas, led by Green Light Go, a graded stales winner in 2019. The horse has not taken part in a race since May of 2020, but he has been training at Oaklawn and looks sharp ahead of the new season. Sunny Dale, who already has three career wins at Oaklawn will also be there, and we may also see Awesome Anywhere, although he will not likely get a race until later in the meet.

Phila D’Amato and Peter Miller, both of whom won 5 races each at Oaklawn last year, will also represent California in the upcoming meet.

HORSE RACING WEEKEND RESULTS

Horse Racing Results – Graded Stakes Results Week Ending Jan. 17, 2021

It was a busy horse racing weekend in the horse racing world, with no less than 6 graded stakes races taking place. That included a trio of races in Japan, as well as a race that counted towards the Road to the Kentucky Derby. We are going to take a look at the horse racing weekend results for all 6 of those races, and we hoped that you cashed a few winning tickets at JazzSports.ag.

Saturday

Fair Grounds Race 10 – Louisiana Stakes (G3) 1 1/16 Mile Dirt – $125,000

A field of 7 took to the dirt for this one, and while the favorite got in the money, it was a horse at longer odds that got the win. Title Ready won by close to 2 lengths and paid $13.00 for the win, beating out Blackberry Wine and Wells Bayou, who started as the race favorite.

Fair Grounds Race 13 – Lecomte Stakes (G3) 1 1/16 Mile Dirt – $200,000

Surprise horse racing results are not uncommon on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, and we got one here. Odds on favorite Mandaloun could only manage a 3rd place finish, with Midnight Bourbon getting the win and paying $9.40.

Chukyo Race 11 – Aichi Hai (G3) 1 ¼ Mile Turf – $737,000

This one proved to be a thrilling race, with longshot Magic Castle holding on to win by a neck over Rambling Alley. Those two were 3 lengths ahead of Uranus Charm, who finished in 3rd.

Sunday

Nakayama Race 11 – Keisei Hai (G3) 1 ¼ Turf – $780,000

There were no surprise horse racing results to be found here, as favorite Gratias romped to a 3-length win over Time to Heaven, who started at 7/2. They both finished ahead of longshot Ten Bagger, who took 3rd.

Chukyo Race 11 – Nikkei Shinshun Hai (G2) 13F Turf – $1,137,000

It was a huge upset day in this race, with a massive longshot taking the win, while race favorite, Admire Virgo, finishing way back in 10th. It was Shoryu Ikuzo who took the win at 18/1, with 98/1 longshot Miss Mamma Mia coming in 2nd.

Santa Anita Race Race 7 – Astra Stakes (G3) 1 ½ Turf – $100,000

Another race where the favorite got up to the win, with Quick, winning by a nose over Hermaphrodite. The winner paid $5.80 and triggered a $12.30 exacta ($1).

NAT WESS RACING EXECUTIVE PASSES AWAY

0
NAT WESS PASSES AWAY

While we always like to report positive horse racing news; we do sometimes see sad stories that need to be reported. There was certainly a sad one this week with the news that legendary horse racing publicist Nat Wess; had passed away at the age of 81. Wess was a major player in the industry in the 70’s and 80’s and will be sorely missed.

Nat Wess initially went into hospital on New Year’s Eve with a fractured hip that needed surgery to repair. During his time in hospital, he eventually delivered a positive test for COVID-19. These details were all revealed in an email sent to members of the Minnesota Racing Commission.

In the early stage of his career; Wess worked as a publicist at Santa Anita before making the switch to Hollywood Park. He spent time in management positions at several different tracks across the country; including time as the assistant GM at Canterbury Park and the GM of the California Breeders Association.

Wess was successful in every job that he took on within the industry

However; it was his time as a promoter at Hollywood Park that really made him and put him on the map. His giveaways and the introduction of the Pick 6 made Hollywood Park the place to be; especially on the weekends, when attendance would routinely top the 50,000 mark. In the 70’s; the track would commonly draw average crowds of over 30,000; with Wess the driving force behind getting people through the gates.

Other notable events on his resume were his tireless work on promoting the Claiming Crown while in its infancy at Philadelphia Park; which is now known as Parx Racing. While with the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association; he played a major role in the creation of the California Cup; a race that just had it’s 31st annual running a couple of days after Wess passed.

Another thing that Nat Wess will certainly be remembered for

Besides his passion for the sport; was the time that he took to help people who were just at the start of their careers within the industry. With that in mind; it is no real surprise that the plaudits from people all across the nation have been pouring in since his death.

Wess is survived by his wife Ellen and his children Deborah and David. Ehiel his memorial service will be for family only; a public service is planned for the summer.

The field of nine is being led by morning-line favorite Warren’s Showtime, a multiple stakes winner. Some of the other top names include Mo See Cal and Leggs Galore.

Santa Anita Park Race 6 – Leigh Ann Howard California Cup Oaks ($200,000)

Santa Anita Park Race 7 – California Cup Derby ($200,000)

The third race of the Cal Cup Day series is open to 3-year-olds and covers 1 1/16 miles. A first-time maiden winner going 6 1/2 furlongs on Dec. 27, The Chosen Vron tops the field of nine.

This race for 4-year-olds and up covers 1 1/8 miles on turf and includes a field of 11. The field is being led by Acclimate, who is 6-2-2 from 19 starts.

Santa Anita Park Race 9 – Don Valpredo California Cup Sprint ($150,000)

The closing race of the Cal Cup Day series is open to 4-year-olds and up and covers six furlongs. One of the leading runners among the field of 11 is Loud Mouth, who came back from a 20 3/4-length allowance loss Oct. 25 to take a four-length win going 6 1/2 furlongs Sept. 26.

He also won the seven-furlong Cary Grant Stakes at Del Mar Nov. 22 after coming in as an afterthought. Other top names in the event include Fashionably Fast and Tigre Di Slugo.

RIDING CROP VIOLATIONS ISSUED AT SANTA ANITA

0
RIDING CROP VIOLATIONS ISSUED AT SANTA ANITA

Horse Racing News – Riding Crop Violations Issued at Santa Anita

Santa Anita Violations: There are numerous rules and regulations in the sport of horse racing, some of which may not be that well known to fans of the sport. It’s often not until violations of the rules are discovered and penalties issued that many fans learn of some of these regulations. We saw one of those come into play at Santa Anita this week.

Stewards at the California track made horse racing news when they decided this week to issue 3-day suspensions to a pair of jockeys for riding crop violations. Umberto Rispoli and Drayden Van Dyke are the jockeys in question, with both receiving suspension after being issued fines for violating the same rule a while back.

New riding crop regulations were put in place at Santa Anita last October. The new rules stated that jockeys could only used riding crops in an underhand manner twice in a row before giving their horse a chance to respond. They were also told that they could only use the crop six times total in any given race. To this point, the fines issued have increased with each offense, with the fine capping at $1,000.

For Van Dyke, this was his fourth riding crop offense in the last 60 days, which mean that he will now serve a suspension on Jan. 17-18, as well as Jan. 22. His violations at Santa Anita came on Jan. 9 when he rode Ultimate Hy to a second-place finish. It was also the 4th violation in 60 days for Rispoli, who received it on Jan. 8 after riding Mac Daddy Too to the win. They became the first jockeys to receive a suspension for repeated violations.

The new rules are not proving to be popular with many jockeys. Perhaps the most vocal of the group has been Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith, as he wrote a letter to the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) in which he claimed that several races had already been impacted by the addition of the new rule. In short, he believes that other horses would have won those races had jockeys not been asked to work within the new regulations.

For their part, the CHRB made the rule changes to try and achieve a better public opinion of the sport, while also doing so to further the humane treatment of racehorses.
