THE INDUSTRY LOST PRINCE KHALID

THE INDUSTRY LOST PRINCE KHALID BIN ABDULLAH

Horse Racing News – Death and Retirement in the Industry

Prince Khalid bin Abdullah Passes Away: One of the most successful owners in the history of horse racing passed away earlier this week. Prince Khalid bin Abdullah, 83, the owner of Juddmonte Farms, died from undisclosed reasons on Tuesday.

To say that Prince Khalid was prolific during his time in the sport is putting things rather mildly. Over the years, he owned over 500 stakes winners. All the more impressive is that 440 of those winners were bred by him, too.

Given that information, it is perhaps no real surprise that Prince Khalid received so many awards and acclaim during his career. He won four Eclipse Awards for top owner and five for top breeder. Arrogate, Empire Maker, and Enable were just a few of his better-known horses.

Thousand Words Retired

Last week, we saw Mucho Gusto forced into retirement, and now this week we have horse racing news that multiple stakes race winner Thousand Words will also be retiring. The 4-year-old son of Pioneer of the Nile will head to Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, Kentucky, where he will be put to stud.

Thousand Words did not take long to get started with accumulating wins, breaking his maiden in his first race at Santa Anita Park as a 2-year-old. He then followed that up with a win at the Los Alamitos Futurity (G2), making for a great juvenile season. In his 3-year-old-season, Thousand Words had wins at the Robert B. Lewis (G3) and the Shared Belief Stakes, setting himself up as one of the top contenders for the Kentucky Derby. Unfortunately, he never got to start in the Run for the Roses, as he was scratched after a paddock accident.

Thousand Words had four wins and a second in his 9-race career, earning $327,500 in the process. He will now be part of the “Share The Upside” breeding program at Spendthrift Farms, with appointment only inspections set to begin immediately.

CHARLATAN TO SKIP THE PEGASUS WORLD CUP

Charlatan to Skip the Pegasus World Cup

Horse Racing News – Charlatan to Skip the Pegasus World Cup

Part of the fun of following horse racing is seeing where the best horses in the world will run next. We are sure to see some of them at the Pegasus World Cup on Jan. 23 at Gulfstream Park, but one horse that we thought we might see there will not be running, as Bob Baffert is now looking at a different date for Charlatan.

Baffert was looking to make horse racing news by training a winner of the Pegasus for the third time in its five-year history, but that will not happen now. Besides Charlatan, Baffert also had last year’s winner Mucho Gusto invited to the big race, but we found out last week that he was retired due to a soft tissue injury that could have been potentially fatal had he continued to race.

The decision to sit Charlatan out of the Pegasus

Was announced by Baffert earlier in the week, and he certainly had valid reasons for making that decision. After a lengthy layoff, Charlatan returned to the track for the Malibu Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita on Dec. 26. He raced hard there and won that race going away. It was the nature of his run and the fact that he was returning after such a long layoff that caused Baffert to believe that the Pegasus was just a little too soon for another race.

Charlatan returned to training on Jan. 9 and looked sharp in a 4-furlong breeze at Santa Anita. At this point, the plan is to enter him into the Saudi Cup, which will be held in Riyadh on Feb. 20, although there is no full commitment to appear in that race just yet. If Charlatan does race in the Saudi Cup, it will see him return to the 1 1/8 mile distance.

The last time that Charlatan stretched out to that distance was at the Arkansas Derby (G2) at Oaklawn Park last May. He won that race by 6 lengths, but went on to make horse racing news after being disqualified for a medication violation. The Saudi Cup will present a whole new challenge for this very talented horse, but with a $20 million purse on offer, it’s a challenge that is well worth taking.

Horse Racing Results – Graded Stakes Races, Week Ending Jan. 10, 2021

Horse Racing Results: There were no races Graded on the Road to the Kentucky Derby this past weekend, but there were still a handful of big horse racing results to pay attention to. All told we had four graded stakes races over the weekend, including a rather lucrative race in Japan. We hope you got your wagers in at JazzSports.ag and cashed some winning tickets, but for those of you who may have missed it, here are the weekend graded stakes horse racing results.

Saturday

Gulfstream Park Race 10 – Tropical Turf Stakes (G3) 1 Mile Turf – $100,000

There was a lot of chalk on display in the Tropical Turf Stakes, with the top 3 favorites all getting in the money. It was a fabulous finish, as Ride a Comet and Casa Creed battled it out coming home, but it was Ride a Comet who prevailed, winning by half a length. Ride a Comet paid $6.20 for the win.

Santa Anita Race 8 – La Canada Stakes (G3) 1 1/16 Mile Dirt – $200,000

We did get a surprise result in this race, with longshot Sanenus driving home for a dominating 6-length win, paying $17 for a $2 bet. We had 14/1 shot Miss Stormy D coming in second and triggering a very nice $1 exacta that paid $94.80. Odds on favorite Fighting Mad finished well off the pace down in 5th.

Santa Anita Race 9 – Las Cienegas Stakes (G3) 6F Turf – $100,000

It was certainly a day of surprises at Santa Anita, as we saw another heavy favorite fail to win in this race. Jolie Olimpica started as an even money favorite, but he failed to get up in time, falling 2 ½ length short of the winner, Charmaine’s Mia, who paid $35.40 for the win, setting off a $58.00 exacta ($1).

Sunday

Chukyo, Japan Race 11 – Shinzan Kinen (G3) 1 Mile Turf – $780,000

The them of surprise horse racing results continued in the early hours of Sunday morning, with Pixie Knight winning the Shinzan Kinen at odds of 12/1. Kukuna started the race as a 7/5 favorite, but he could only manage a 4th place finish in what is sure to be a disappointment for the owner and trainer.

PREP RACE SCHEDULE FOR JANUARY

THE REMAINING PREP RACE SCHEDULE FOR JANUARY

Road to the Kentucky Derby – The Remaining Prep Race Schedule for January

We saw the New Year get off to a busy start in the Road to the Kentucky Derby, with no less than three qualifying races on the prep race schedule last weekend. With each passing race, we see the odds in the Kentucky Derby futures pool change over at JazzSports.ag, but those odds are not going to remain as they are for very much longer.

For all the horses that are in the running to be a part of the Derby, the road is just beginning. Picking up a win and the points that come with it is fine, but there are a lot of races still to come. Some of the early favorites will fall, while others will deliver breakout performances that see their fortunes change dramatically.

It is going to be a busy month coming up, as we still have four races to come in the Road to the Kentucky Derby, so let’s take a look at what is ahead of us.

The next race up

Is the Lecomte Stakes, which will be run at the Fair Grounds in Louisiana on January 16. This is a race that had humble beginnings back in 1996, but it is now one of the most important prep races on the calendar. It officially became a graded stakes race back in 2003.

Next up on the calendar is the Smarty Jones Stakes, which will be held at Oaklawn Park on January 22. This race first became part of the Road to the Kentucky Derby in 2009, although it is worth noting that no winner of this race went on to win the Derby.

The final weekend of the month is a big one, as we will have a pair of prep races on the calendar on January 30. There are five Derby prep races held at Santa Anita Park and it is the Robert B. Lewis Stakes that serves as the third of the five this season. Ferdinand was the first horse to win this race and then go on and win the Derby. We also have the Holy Bull on this Saturday, with that race set for Gulfstream Park. Go For Gin, Funny Cide, and Barbaro have all won here and gone on to win the Kentucky Derby, so definitely a prominent date on the calendar.

GRADED STAKES SNEAK PEEK

Horse Racing Cards – Graded Stakes Sneak Peek, Week Ending Jan.10

We had several horse racing cards last weekend that contained Kentucky Derby prep races. There are no prep races on the calendar until next weekend; which is when we have the Lecomte; but there are still a few graded stakes races to take a quick look at. As always; we will be simply taking a sneak peek at what is to come this weekend, with a full preview of all the big races coming your way on Saturday morning. All told; there are four graded stakes races on tap over the next couple of days; including one all the way over in Japan, so let’s get into those horse racing cards now.

The bulk of the graded stakes action takes place on Saturday; with three races split between Santa Anita and Gulfstream Park. There are a pair of turf races in the mix; the first of which is the Tropical Turf Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream.

This race will have 9 horses vying for a $100,000 purse over a mile on the turf. A good field for this one.

Also, on Saturday; we have a pair of graded stakes races at Santa Anita; with one on the dirt and the other on the turf. These races will be run back-to-back, starting with the La Canada Stakes (G3). This one will go 1 1/16 mile over the dirt; and will have 7 horses racing for a very nice $200,000 purse. The second stakes race at Santa Anita; is the Las Cienegas Stakes (G#), with that one set to go 6F over the turf. With one entry already scratched, the field for this race is down to 6.

The final graded stakes race of the weekend will be held over in Kyoto, Japan. The Shinzan Kinen (G3) will have a field of 10; going a mile over the turf as they duke it out for a very nice purse of $780,000.

Early tomorrow, we will have further details on each of the races mentioned above, including a breakdown of the favorites and all the odds; courtesy of JazzSports.ag

INVITATION LIST FOR THE PEGASUS WORLD CUP RELEASED

INVITATION LIST FOR THE PEGASUS WORLD CUP RELEASED

Horse Racing News – Invitation List for the Pegasus World Cup Released

We all tend to think of the Triple Crown when talking about the biggest races in the world but there are plenty of others that you should be paying attention to if you want to see the best horses go head-to-head. One of those is the Pegasus World Cup Invitational, which will be run at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 23. The $3 million graded stakes race, which will be entering its 5th year in 2021, is run over a 1 1/8 Mile and has an amazing list of previous winners.

The Pegasus made horse racing news this week when they announced the list of 16 horses that have been invited to this year’s event. That list initially included Mucho Gusto, who won it last year, but it was announced today that he is being retired after it was discovered that he has some soft tissue damage.

Bob Baffert, who trained Mucho Gusto

Will certainly be disappointed at seeing his horse forced into retirement, but he still has another shot at training a winner for the Pegasus, as he also has Charlatan among the list of invited horses. This is a race that Bob Baffert has had a lot of joy with, as he will be shooting for his third win this year. Besides getting the win with Mucho Gusto, he also won with Arrogate back in 2017, which was the inaugural running of the Pegasus. He would certainly make horse racing news if he was to complete the hat-trick this year.

Some of the Other Horses Invited to the Pegasus

The Pegasus is the first of a group of lucrative races that also includes the Dubai World Cup and the Saudi Cup. These races attract the best horses out there, so let’s take a look at a couple of the horses on the invite list for the Pegasus.

Sharp Samurai has not won since 2018, but this is a horse that always seems to get in the money at major stakes races, including the Breeders Cup Dirt Mile and the TVG Pacific Classic Stakes. Knicks Go has won an impressive list of stakes races, with his latest coming at the Breeders Cup Dirt Mile at Keeneland. Another horse that is not stranger to graded stakes races is Code of Honor, who will make his 13th consecutive start in a graded race with this one.

BRAD COX SHOOTING FOR DERBY WIN WITH ESSENTIAL QUALITY

BRAD COX SHOOTING FOR DERBY WIN WITH ESSENTIAL QUALITY

ROAD TO THE KENTUCKY DERBY

Brad Cox has already proven that he is a successful trainer, but he will also tell you that his number one goal in the sport is to train a Kentucky Derby winner. There are still a lot of challenges to come over the next couple of months, but as it stands now in the Road to the Kentucky Derby, Cox has a shot at entering his first horse into the big race, with Essential Quality sitting atop the points leaderboard with 30.

Jazz Sports currently has Essential Quality as the favorite to win the Derby at odds of +850, but this horse, as well as the rest of the potential contenders, still have a lot of work to do before they take to the field at Churchill Downs. Essential Quality broke his maiden at Churchill Downs last September before going on to win the Breeders Futurity (G1), a win that really put him on the Road to the Kentucky Derby map.

What is next for Essential Quality?

Brad Cox revealed that his horse will be entered into a points prep race, most likely in February, with the Southwest and the Risen Star both viewed as potential landing spots for the 3-year-old. A win at either of those races would further cement this horse as the Kentucky Derby favorite.

Cox Has More Than One Horse in as a Kentucky Derby Candidate

Give that Essential Quality is atop the leaderboard and in as the very early Derby favorite, it is ni surprise that he is getting all the headlines. It is worth noting, though, that Cox has some other horses who are in the Derby hunt, although one or two may have to settle for the Kentucky Oaks, which Cox has won twice as a trainer.

The most likely of those other horses is Caddo River, who finally broke his maiden on his third attempt at Churchill Downs. He is currently training at Oaklawn Park and doing well. Cox believes that this horse is better suited to longer distances, so they will be stretching him out in upcoming races.

Prate and Mandaloun are two more who are trained by Cox and in the Kentucky Derby conversation. They have a lot to do to get in, but they do still have time to make their mark.

MARRIED JOCKEYS RECEIVE STRANGE GIFT

MARRIED JOCKEYS RECEIVE STRANGE GIFT

Horse Racing News – Married Jockeys Receive Strange Gift

When a couple gets married, they expect to share everything in life, but for jockeys Trevor McCarthy and Katie Davis, what they received from the New York Racing Association (NYRA) was unexpected to say the least.

The couple, who tied the knot in December, made horse racing news when they quickly learned that their entries must be coupled whenever they ride in the same race at any track operated by the NYRA. This is a rule set forth by the New York State Gaming Commission and it means that the couple will now ride as a single entry whenever they run in the same race. This is common practice in races where there is more than one horse with the same owner/trainer combo, but it is not something we see often with jockeys. It seems to be a rather strange rule when applied to jockeys, but it’s one that McCarthy and Davis are going to need to adhere to moving forward.

Why the Rule is in Place

Horse racing news was made when the original rule was strictly enforced, although it has been lightened over the years. It was put in place because of the potential for pool manipulation by owners and trainers, with the thought being that there was the possibility of them changing the running style of their horses to ensure a better payout on the tote board. In many cases, a trainer will enter a speed horse to help set a pace that suits his other horse in the race. Those horses were paired so that the betting public would not feel as though they were somehow being deceived. Similar rules apply in the case of the jockeys, as the NYRA does not want the betting public to feel as though a married couple might somehow work together to affect the outcome of a race.

McCarthy is the busier of the two jockeys, riding 737 horses in 2020 as compared to the 240 rides that Davis had. While trainers have said that the marriage will not affect their decision on choosing a jockey, McCarthy still fears that the decision may negatively impact his wife. Davis shares those concerns and would like to see the rule changed. She claims that when the couple race against one another, they go all out to ensure that they do not give each other a shot at winning.

GRADED STAKES RECAP WEEK ENDING

Horse Racing Results – Graded Stakes Recap, Week Ending Jan. 4, 2021

It was a big weekend these past few days, with no less than three Kentucky Derby prep races taking place. There were also several other graded stakes recap of the races over the weekend; so we have a lot of horse racing results to cover, so let’s get right to it.

Friday

Santa Anita Race 7 – Joe Hernandez Stakes 6 1/2F Turf – $200,000

This one did not go as expected; with 5/1 shot Hembree coming from well off the pace to deliver a blistering run down the stretch. He paid $12.40 for the win, while the race favorite Wildman Jack finished out of the money.

Aqueduct Race 8 – Jerome Stakes 1M Dirt – $150,000
The first of the Kentucky Derby prep races delivered a surprise; with Capo Kane leading from start to finish to take the wire and pay $15.80 for the win. He also picked up 10 points towards the Road to the Kentucky Derby.

Saturday

Santa Anita Race 7 – San Gabriel Stakes 1 1/8 Turf – $200,000
Count Again started this one as an even money favorite but failed to make any impact; eventually finishing dead last in a field of 7. It was Anothertwistofate who finished first and paid $7.60 for the win.

Santa Anita Race 8 – Sham Stakes 1 Mile Dirt – $100,000
This was the next of the Kentucky Derby prep races; so one of the most important horse racing results of the weekend. There were no surprises here, as Life is Good recovered from a bump at the start to romp home for the win and the 10 points up for grabs for the winner. Life is Good paid $2.40 for the win and will now set his sights a little higher for future races.

Gulfstream Park Race 10 – Mucho Macho Man Stakes 1 Mile Dirt – $100,000
This was the final Derby prep race of the weekend and it was another where the favorite recovered form a rough start to get up and get the win.

Mutasaabeq stumbled out of the gate; but settled in nicely, coming good down the stretch to win at even money odds and pay $4.20. No points up for grabs in this one, but still a statement race for the winner.
