ZIA PARK STARTER FOUND WITH DEVICE

Horse Racing News – Zia Park Starter Found in Possession of Electrical Device

Before the start of racing at Zia Park on Tuesday, Dec. 22, an assistant starter was found in possession of an electrical device. The starter has since been suspended by the New Mexico Racing Commission (NMRC); and has also been excluded from the grounds.

The Association of Racing Commissioners International posted their decision online; citing Jaime Aldavaz Jr. with disruptive behavior and saying that he was “interfering with the orderly conduct of the race meet.”

It was the Lea County Drug Enforcement Agency who discovered the electrical device while performing a search.

Before we continue; make sure to take a look at some of the 2021 Kentucky Derby futures & betting odds currently available at JAZZSports.ag

The nature of the device has, to this point, not been revealed.

In most cases; it is a buzzer that is used by jockeys to prompt their mount to run faster during the course of a race. Goes without saying that the use of such devices is prohibited.

It’s somewhat surprising to see a starter caught with an electrical device, as most previous cases have involved jockeys. One of the most recent cases came at Canterbury Park; where jockey Danny Velazquez made horse racing news when he was found to have a buzzer and a loaded firearm in his vehicle earlier this year. Velazquez was ultimately suspended for a year by Canterbury Park stewards.

Given that assistant starters are in close contact when leading horses into the starting gate; there does exist an opportunity to pass on an electrical device. No other party was named in the ruling, but a schedule with the stewards will be conducted on Dec. 30 via teleconference, which could result in further horse racing news regarding this incident.

This is not the first time that there has been an issue with an assistant starter at Zia Park this year. Just last month, Ramon Alvarez Jr. received a 6-month suspension related to starting gate misconduct. According to an NMRC executive; Alvarez was seen slapping a horse numerous times while it was in the starting gate during one of the races at Zia Park on Oct. 20.

The latest incident is another black eye for the racetrack; so it will be interesting to see what steps they take in an effort to crack down on these issues.

Road to the Kentucky Derby – Standings After Nine Races

The road to the Kentucky Derby is a long one, with a total of 36 prep races run in preparation for the first leg of the Triple Crown. That does not include the races in Japan and Europe; so you get an idea of just how tough it is to become a part of that esteemed 20-horse field at the Derby.

This past weekend saw a pair of points races run, which altered the standings a little. With those races now in the books; we have had 9 of the 36 races completed, so there is still a long way to go. We will be keeping you regularly updated with all that is going on with the road to the Derby in the coming weeks; and while it is still very early in the proceedings; we thought it might be a good idea to take a look at the standings right now.

Before we continue, take a look at some of the 2021 Kentucky Derby futures & betting odds currently available at JAZZSports.ag:

Who Picked Up Points This Past Weekend?

We are seeing something a little different on the road to the Derby this year, as it is possible for horses to win or place in prep races and still not receive any points. The reason for that is because Lasix is being phased out in 2021, so horses running with the medication are not eligible for points.

That affected a trio of horses – Senor Buscador, Red N Wild, and Saffa’s Day – at the Springboard Mile at Remington Park on Friday. The only horse in the top four in that race to pick up points was Cowan; who received 4 points for finishing 2nd behind Senor Buscador.

It was a different story at the Los Alamitos Futurity on Saturday; with all of the top four horses picking up valuable points. The big winner there was Spielberg, who won by a nose and picked up 10 points in the process. Spielberg is now 4th in the overall standings with 12 points and is sitting at +3500 to win the Kentucky Derby at Jazz Sports. The other points getters on Saturday were The Great One (4), Petruchio (2), and Red Flag (1).

In the overall standings, it is still Essential Quality who leads the way with 30 points. Keepmeinmind (18) and Jackie’s Warrior (12) round out the top three. Essential Quality is still the very early favorite to win the Derby.

SANTA ANITA OPENING DAY RACE CARD

SANTA ANITA OPENING DAY RACE CARD

Santa Anita to Deliver a Huge Opening Day Race Card

The opening day of any track is always a big deal; but there is always something a little special about the first day of racing at Santa Anita. The winter/spring meet is set to get underway this coming Saturday; Dec 26 and it promises to be a belated Christmas gift for race fans, especially those who love graded stakes races.

Santa Anita is making horse racing news this weekend; as their opening day card will include no less than five different graded stakes races. We will have all the details of these races a little later this week; but we thought it might be fun to give you guys a little teaser look at all the action that is coming on Saturday.

The first of the five races is the Malibu Stakes (G1)

Which will be run over 7F and will have a field of seven. There are several horses to look out for in this one; but it is the return of Charlatan from an ankle injury that is perhaps the biggest story.

Next up is the La Brea Stakes (G1), another 7F race that will have a field of ten horses entering the starting gate. We have a former stakes winner, Finite, shipping in for this one, but a solid field indeed.

The San Antonio Stakes (G2) is the next on the list; with a seven horse field set to contest this one over a 1 1/16 mile course. Listed as probable, we might well see Bob Baffert enter Mucho Gusto into this race.

We head to the turf next for the Mathis Brother Mile (G2)

With nine horses set to go in what looks to be a very competitive lineup. Storm the Court; will be in here looking for his first graded stakes win since taking the wire at the 2019 Breeders Cup.

We have our largest field of the day in the final graded stakes race this Saturday, with ten horses in for the American Oaks (G1). Sharing will be making her second start after a layoff as she looks to master a 1 ¼ over the turf.

It’s going to be a massive day of racing on the opening day at Santa Anita this Saturday and we will break down all of these races a little later in the week, so be sure to stop by for updates.

GRADED STAKES RESULTS WEEK ENDING

Horse Racing Results – Graded Stakes Results Week Ending Dec. 20, 2020

Over the course of the next few weeks; much of our attention is going to be on the graded stakes races for the 2021 Kentucky Derby. Besides that, we will also be keeping an eye on all the major stakes races taking place each weekend.

We will preview those races ahead of time, and then deliver recaps and results the following Monday. The goal here is to deliver horse racing results that better prepare you for how to play the upcoming Derby. There is going to be a lot of ground to cover; so let’s get started with the major horse racing results from this past weekend.

Los Alamitos Futurity (G2)

The Road to the Derby ran through Los Alamitos over the weekend, with the Futurity serving as the 9th of the 36 North American races that will count as qualifiers for the Kentucky Derby. If you missed this one, you should definitely go watch a replay, as it turned into an absolute thriller.

Red Flag came into the races as the odds-on favorite; but it turned out to be a disappointing day for bettors who had their money on that horse. He tried to make a move as they turned into the stretch, but he couldn’t sustain it, ending up finishing 4th.

At the end of the day; it came down to trying to catch The Great One, a longshot which came ever so close to springing the upset. He led from the off, but was run down at the post by Spielberg, who took it by a nose. Equibase had the speed figure at 99; which was the lowest number since 2013, when Shared Belief also posted that figure. Spielberg paid $5.80 for the win.

Mr. Prospector Stakes (G3)

The only other graded stakes race on the schedule over the weekend was the Mr. Prospector at Gulfstream Park. It was an 11-horse field for this one; with a strong finish enough to get Sleepy Eyes Todd to the finish line first.

Wind of Change set a solid early pace, which set things up nicely for the closers in the field. The eventual winner begam to make move at the ½ mile pole and held of the hard charging Firenze Fire to get the win by a length and a half. Mind Control rounded out the top 3. Sleepy Eyes Todd paid $12.20 for the win.

NEBRASKA TRACKS ANNOUNCE CASINO GAMBLING

NEBRASKA TRACKS ANNOUNCE CASINO GAMBLING

Horse Racing News – Nebraska Racing Tracks Announce Casino Gambling

Over the past couple of decades; we have seen several race tracks go out of business, with others clinging to life. For example, the shiny new stadium that is home to the Los Angeles Chargers and the Rams; sits on the spot that was once Hollywood Park. The tracks that have survived and thrived are those that have added other gambling opportunities to their business model; like casino gambling.

Slot machines and other forms of casino gambling are now a staple in many racetracks across the country. Now; three tracks in Nebraska: Horsemen’s Park in Omaha, Lincoln Racecourse in Lincoln and Atokad in South Sioux City; will be added to the list of tracks with casino gambling on-site.

WarHorse Gaming; a division of Ho-Chunk Inc., has been given the task of managing and expanding the casino gambling operations at the tracks mentioned above.

While the new group will be in charge of that side of the business; it will still be the Nebraska HBPA that handles the horse racing side of things.

The Casino Gambling Schedule

WarHorse Gaming and the Nebraska HBPA are currently working together to formulate a timeline that works for both sides. Management at WarHorse believe that some form of expanded gaming will be in place at each of the tracks later in 2021; but it will likely be the following year before the full casino setup is officially in place and ready to go.

They have guaranteed that the betting public will be made aware of the official timeline as the plans continue to evolve.

On the business side of things, it was announced that Brian Chamberlain would serve as the Gaming Executive for WarHorse.

Blue Earth Marketing; a subsidiary of Ho-Chunk, was formally announced as agency of record for all three of the new casinos.

While the addition of casino gambling facilities is going to be exciting for patrons of the racetracks; it is also very good for the states.

Besides having more job opportunities for Nebraska residents; the additional income that the casinos will provide will mean more money in the state coffers in the form of increased tax revenues.

This really is a win/win situation for all involved; and is another positive shot in the arm for the horse racing industry.

FLUTTER ENTERTAINMENT ON THE HOOK

FLUTTER ENTERTAINMENT ON THE HOOK

Horse Racing News – TVG Partner Flutter Entertainment on the Hook for Mammoth Payout

Flutter Entertainment, the parent company of TVG, received some news yesterday; that could potentially cost them in the region of $1 billion. The Kentucky Supreme Court overturned a Court of Appeals decision regarding the state’s Loss Recovery Act.

The original suit was filed against Flutter, and specifically their online poker brand; PokerStars, by Kentucky residents who had previously lost money on the poker site.

The Kentucky Supreme Court decided that PokerStars should be classified as an illegal gambling site; which is why Flutter Entertainment is now in the hook for losses sustained by residents of the state who lost money there.

All told; the amount due to be paid back is $870 million; but add on the interest that is allowed and you get a little closer to the billion-dollar mark.

This is a lawsuit that has been dragging on for quite some time.

The original lawsuit filed by the Commonwealth of Kentucky back in 2010. The suit was initially filed against The Stars Group, who were the sole owners of PokerStars before joining forces with the Flutter Group.

After a 5-year battle; a Kentucky trial court judge decided that Flutter were liable for the damages, but that decision was overturned by the Court of Appeals in 2018. With the latest results, Flutter will now need to add 12% interest per annum of top of the $870 million decision.

If there is a silver lining for Flutter in this horse racing news story; it is that they may not have to pay out the full amount.

Flutter announced that their gross revenues in the relevant five years; came in at around $18 million, which leads them to assume that they will only be required to play a small portion of the settlement. That number seems to be at odds with the $290 million; that PokerStars collected on rakes during that same five-year period.

During that time, many sites were operating under what they called a gray are in regards online gambling laws. The State of Kentucky does not see it that way; though, as they are of the belief that there are no gray areas and that the sites in question were violating the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act.

This is a decision that had been 10 years in the making; but it would appear that it may yet go on a little longer before any monies are paid out.

ROAD TO THE 2021 KENTUCKY DERBY

Latest Updates on the Road to the 2021 Kentucky Derby

The Road to the 2021 Kentucky Derby is still very much in the early stages, but in the coming weeks, we are going to see the qualifying races begin to heat up. One thing that some racing fans may not be aware of is that the battle for those 20 coveted spots extends beyond North America. In fact, we have an update to deliver on the Road to the Derby in Japan.

Before we continue, take a look at some of the 2021 Kentucky Derby futures & betting odds currently available at JAZZSports.ag:

A total of four races will be held in Japan counting towards the Road to the Derby qualifying, although it should be noted that none of the owners of the horses in the picture have actually come out and said that their horse will officially enter the 2021 Kentucky Derby.

The latest race was the Zen-Nippon Nisai Yushun at Kawasaki Racecourse, which was comfortably won by Alain Barrows. That win moved him ahead of Lemon Pop, who won the Cattleya Sho race at the Tokyo racecourse back in November. It is perhaps no surprise that the winners of the first two races are now the betting favorites in the Japan Road to the Derby wagering, which is as follows:

Alain Barows +7500
Lemon Pop +12500

Keepmeinmind Heads to Oaklawn

In other 2021 Kentucky Derby news, 2-year-old contender Keepmeinmind will be heading to Oaklawn Park, where he will work out before racing next year. Trainer Robertino Diodoro announced that the colt would likely arrive at Oaklawn sometime between Dec. 25 and the end of the year, but he was not yet sure of which races Keepmeinmind would appear in.

The Oaklawn Park meet starts on Jan. 22 and will include four races that are qualifiers for the 2021 Kentucky Derby. Diodoro has already ruled out the Smarty Jones Stakes, which will go on opening day, as he believes that the 1-mile race is a little too short for his horse. The most likely race would be the $750,000 Southwest Stakes (G3), which is 1 1/16 miles. That race is set to go on Feb. 15.

Keepmeinmind broke his maiden with a win at the $200,000 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) in late November. While we are not yet sure of what his upcoming schedule will look like ahead of the Derby, we do know that he is already generating some serious buzz. We will be keeping an eye on his status as we head into the New Year.

SEVERE WEATHER CAUSES RACETRACKS TO CLOSE

WEATHER CAUSES RACETRACKS TO CLOSE

SEVERE WEATHER WREAKS HAVOC ON THE EAST COAST

Severe weather has arrived in a big way along the east coast of the United States, which has caused racetracks to close ahead of the storm. New York and Maryland have both been hit hard, so it is perhaps no real surprise that we are already seeing track closures announced on Thursday morning.

Before we continue, take a look at some of the 2021 Kentucky Derby futures & betting odds currently available at JAZZSports.ag:

Laurel Park has already announced that they will be closed on Dec. 17; with the New York Racing Association (NYRA) letting the public know that Aqueduct will also be shuttered for the day.

These were closures that most people saw coming given the weather reports coming out a couple of days ago. Once the National Weather Service announced a winter storm approaching the east coast,; the belief was that the horse racing news for the next few days would not be particularly good.

The New York metropolitan area appears to be taking the brunt of the storm. Which called for high winds, snow accumulation, and potential coastal flooding.

Those winds are expected to hit up to 50 MPH; while residents of the area are looking at 9-12 inches of snow on Thursday, none of which is conducive to horse racing. Aqueduct was set to have an 8-race card on Dec. 17, and while that is now canceled, the NYRA believes that the track will be ready to re-open for business on Friday.

While the weather was not quite as severe in Maryland, snow, sleet, and rain descended on the state and made it impossible for live racing to go ahead as planned. The Maryland Jockey Club quickly announced that racing at Laurel Park was canceled on Thursday; although they also made it clear that simulcast locations will remain open on Dec. 17, which is a good bit of horse racing news for fans. Just as in New York, live racing is expected to return to Laurel Park on Friday with a 9-race card.

It is always disappointing to see race cards canceled, but these postponements have been done to secure the safety of horses, jockeys, fans; and all the employees at both tracks.

PRIME FACTOR AT GULFSTREAM PARK

Prime Factor at Gulfstream Park

Prime Factor Shines in Debut at Gulfstream Park

As we head towards the end of the year, much of the horse racing news is about the Kentucky Derby Futures Pool. Many of the horses in the pool have yet to run their first race, but we can see the odds change rather dramatically when they do. That is what happened over the weekend at Gulfstream Park when Prime Factor broke his maiden in a rather spectacular fashion.

Before we continue, take a look at some of the 2021 Kentucky Derby futures & betting odds currently available at JAZZSports.ag:

Prime Factor is a 2-year-old yearling who was purchased at auction for $900,000 and is now trained by iconic trainer Todd Pletcher. Hopes are high for this horse, but you can never really know what to expect from any thoroughbred until they take to the track and run. From what we saw over the weekend, Prime Factor is going to be one to watch.

The first race for Prime Factor was a 6 Furlong Maiden Race at Gulfstream Park.

Ridden by Irad Ortiz, Prime Factor broke well from the gate and assumed a comfortable position that allowed

It’s incredible what an outstanding performance can do, as Prime Factor saw his odds in the Kentucky Derby Futures Pool. Our friends at Jazz Sports shortened his odds from 200/1 to 25/1 shortly after the race, putting Prime Factor in among the favorites to move out of that large pool of horses and into the Kentucky Derby. There are more races to come against much better horses, so it will be interesting to see if those odds continue to shorten in the coming weeks and months.

KENTUCKY DERBY 2021: FUTURES & ODDS

0

Kentucky Derby Futures: Some sporting events pull in bettors like no other, with the Super Bowl probably sitting at the top of that list. The Kentucky Derby is not that far behind; though, as it is one of the few big sports events that can pull in experienced and novice bettors alike. Even people who have never bet on a horse race in their life will pick a horse and place a few bucks on the Derby each year.

The people who don’t follow horse racing; probably have no idea what it takes to set the field for the 2021 Kentucky Derby.

Throughout the next few months; eligible horses will be trying to accumulate points earned in specific races to make it into the field of 20 horses that will enter the starting gate next tear.

From the eligible group of horses, we have what is known as the Kentucky Derby Future Pool. Essentially, you can bet now on the horses that you think will come out of that pool and into the 2021 Kentucky Derby.

The races come thick and fast on the Road to the Derby; so you will find that these odds can change quickly. If you like a specific horse, now is the time to wager, as it may be the best odds you get.

Latest Kentucky Derby Futures Update

An example of how quickly things can change was seen over the weekend at Gulfstream Park. Prime Factor, a $900,000 yearling trained by Todd Pletcher, started the day at 200/1 in the Kentucky Derby Future Pool. By the time his maiden race was over, a race that he won by 8 ¾ lengths in a blistering time of 1:10.38, those odds had dropped to 25/1. If Prime Factor continues to deliver similar performances, albeit in bigger races, those odds are going to shorten even more.

Several other horses have yet to race who might well be worth a look in the Kentucky Derby Futures Pool. You have the option of placing a wager on them now, before their opening race or waiting to see how they perform when they hit the track for the first time.
