HORSE RACING RESULTS: GULFSTREAM STAKES RACES, DEC. 12

0

We are on the path to the Kentucky Derby right now, and while there were no stakes races counting as qualifiers this past weekend, there were still plenty of bid races on the calendar. We are turning out attention to the horse racing results out of Gulfstream Park this past Saturday, where there were five stakes races to pay attention to. Let’s take a closer look at the results from those races.

**Before we continue; take a look at some of the horse racing cards and betting odds currently available at classic online racebook JAZZSports.ag

Race 4 Rampart Stakes (G3)

There were no surprising horse racing results to be found in the first big race of the day. It was the favorite, Letruska, with a powerful performance, winning by 3 lengths. The favorite paid $5.00 for the win, with Dream Marie and Bajan Girl rounding out the top three. No big payouts to speak of in this race.

Race 6 Sugar Swirl Stakes (G3)

We certainly had a bit of an upset in this race, with Lady’s Island hanging on to win at 9/2 odds. Longshot Bronx Bunny just missed coming down the stretch, while Cinnabunny, who started the race as the favorite, came in 3rd. Some nice payouts in this one. The $1 exacta paid $26.70, while the $1 trifecta paid $83.60.

Race 8 My Charmer Stakes

This race delivered a serious upset, not to mention a nice return for bettors who got it right. Niko’s Dream made a big move coming home to take the win at 14/1, paying $29.20 for the win. Tuned got up to finish 2nd, with Art of Almost rounding out the top three. The $1 exacta paid $77.90, with the $1 trifecta paying $305.60.

Race 9 Harlan’s Holiday Stakes (G3)

There were a trio of horses starting this one around 2/1, and we had two of those horses land in the top three. It was Tax who pulled away for the comfortable win, paying $6.60. Eyes of a Jedi finished 4 ½ lengths back, with Phat Man in 3rd. The $1 exacta paid out $30.70, while the trifecta paid $81.80.

Race 10 Ft. Lauderdale Stakes (G2)

The biggest surprises and payouts of the day came in the final stakes race on Saturday. Largent drove home late, paying $35.80 for the win. It was a pair of longshots who rounded out the top three, with Doswell and Breaking the Rules taking 2nd and 3rd, respectively. The $1 exacta paid $223.50, while the trifecta paid a whopping $1,889.40.

TURFWAY PARK CONTINUES TO IMPROVE

0

Last October, Churchill Downs Inc. purchased Turfway park for $46 million dollars and stated that they would commit a further $100 million to make improvements to the facility. The new owners are making horse racing news by living up to that promise in a big way.

The old grandstand was the first to go, with demolition taking place earlier this year in April. In its place Turfway Park will have a state-of-the-art facility that will include new food and drink spots, as well as historical racing machines and other forms of revenue. The race was on to get things ready for the current meet, which runs through to the end of the year.

**Before we continue; take a look at some of the horse racing cards and betting odds currently available at classic online racebook JAZZSports.ag

With more money coming in, we can expect to see the purses climb at the updated park, but it is the new track that is generating a great deal of buzz at the moment. Jockeys are raving about the new surface, which could also help boost the quality of racing that we see at the iconic Kentucky track.

High Praise for the New Turfway Surface

While it is important to keep the fans happy when they head to the track, it’s also a good idea to make sure that the jockeys are also on board with the changes. That certainly seems to be the case with the new Tapeta track, as jockeys are already raving about the surface, although they are also saying that there is a bit of a learning curve that comes with riding on it.

Everyone is in agreement that it is a major upgrade from the Polytrack surface that was in place prior to the start of the current season. In particular, jockeys are saying that the new track offers many more ways to win, with front-runners and off the pace horses all now having a fair shot at getting to the finish line first. That is great news for everyone who loves to see competitive racing.

With a quality track surface in place, GM Chip Bach believes that more talented horses and jockeys will now make the trek to Turfway Park in seasons to come. It was great to see this fantastic track saved, but even better to see it thriving under new ownership.

LATEST NEWS: STEWARDS CLOSE CASE ON JUSTIFY AND HOPPERTUNITY

0

These latest news in the horse racing community had a long time coming; Finally looks as though cases against Justify and Hoppertunity have finally been decided. On Wednesday, Santa Anita stewards dismissed appeals against the two horses that date back to failed drug tests from 2018.

Both horses, whom are trained by Bob Baffert. Had trace levels of scopolamine in their systems after being tested in different races.

Justify had won the Santa Anita Derby (G1). While Hoppertunity was the winner at the Tokyo City Cup (G1).

The Santa Anita stewards announced the dismissal of the appeals in a statement that said that the matter had already been ruled by the CHRB back on Aug. 23, 2018.

Baffert also issued a statement saying that he was pleased with the outcome; most notably for Justify. Who ended his career with an unbeaten record.

Where Did the Suit Originate?

It was Mick Ruis, the owner of Bolt D’Oro, the horse that finished second to Justify in the Santa Anita Derby, who put the lawsuit together. Ruis believed that Justify should have been disqualified after the positive test.

Has that happened, the horse would not have been eligible for the Kentucky Derby; which he won on the way to a Triple Crown.

An out-of-court settlement of the suit dictated that the CHRB must file new complaints that were finally heard by the Santa Anita stewards in October.

After a four hour meeting; a trio of stewards decided that there was no new evidence that would lead them to overrule the decision made by the CHRB in 2018.

During testimony delivered during the original lawsuit, veterinarian Dr. Rick Arthur said; that the scopolamine came from environmental contamination.

Specifically from the hay fed to the horses in question, as well as five others.

Scopolamine is considered a low-level drug that does nothing to increase the performance of a racehorse.

The fact that this was not intentional dosing was enough for the case to essentially be dismissed.

ROBERT HESS Sr. DIES FROM COVID-19

0

We have some terrible horse racing news to share today, as Robert Hess Sr.; a trainer in Northern California, has passed away from COVID-19 at the age of 86. He was one of the 200 workers at Golden Gate Fields who tested positive for the virus.

Hess Sr. was something of a legend in the state, training horses for over a half-century; leading his stable to over 1,500 wins and more than $17 million in total purse earnings. He trained many fabulous horses, but My Creed may well have been the best of them all. My Creed amassed close to $400,000 in earnings in seven years of racing; winning the 2007 Berkeley Stakes at Golden Gate Fields.

In his early years; Hess was raised on a farm in Pennsylvania, beginning his work with horses at the tender age of six. It was a trip to Santa Anita Park at the age of 18, just before serving in the Army; that began his career path in horse racing. Once his military service was over, Hess took jobs at Playfair and Longacres while also training horses at the West Coast tracks.

While working at Caliente in Tijuana, Baja California, Hess met his future wife, Maria Elena. They had four children together, and the family relocated to Northern California in 1971 after the Caliente track burned down in 1971.

Bob Jr. watched his father’s career with keen interest; and while he graduated from Stanford with a degree in economics, it wasn’t long before he was working as an assistant to Hess Sr. He performed that job from 1983 to 1987, after which he forged his own path in the horse racing industry, making horse racing news of his own in what has been a fabulous training career to this point.

Bob Hess Sr. is survived by his wife, his four children, and six grandchildren

BODEXPRESS IS SUDDENLY RETIRED WITH LEG INJURY

0

Fan favorite Bodexpress (Bodemeister–Pied a Terre, by City Zip), recent winner of the GI Clark H. at Churchill Downs Nov. 27, has been retired after suffering an undisclosed; career-ending injury in the race, according to a tweet late Sunday from trainer and part-owner Gustavo Delgado.

“With great regret, we announce the retirement of Bodexpress,” the tweet read. “He suffered a career-ending injury while winning the G1 Clark Handicap. A very talented colt, who finally showed his potential at CD. Thank you Bode for the journey & memories. To his fans, Thank you for your support!!!”

Before we continue on with the latest news, take a look at some of the hottest horses betting odds currently available at JAZZSports.ag:

Trainer Gustavo Delgado announced the retirement of Bodexpress.

The retirement of the 4-year-old Bodemeister colt brings to a close one of the more unusual careers in recent memory.

Bodexpress caught the public’s eye when he entered last year’s Triple Crown races as a maiden; winless in his first five starts in South Florida. However, he earned his place in the national conversation following a surprising runner-up finish behind Maximum Security in the Grade 1 Florida Derby.

An impressive Horse All-Around

The colt was one of the horses impeded by Maximum Security’s erratic trip in the Kentucky Derby, where he finished 13th.

Then, he gained cult hero status in the Preakness Stakes after tossing rider John Velazquez at the gate and going around the track in the race riderless; with additional antics after the field had crossed the wire.

After taking the summer off, Bodexpress returned in October of his 3-year-old season to break his maiden in a Gulfstream Park West maiden special weight. He followed up that effort with a 6 3/4-length score in a Gulfstream Park allowance race.

Those two wins returned Bodexpress to stakes competition; where he finished third in the G3 Harlan’s Holiday Stakes, and fifth in this year’s G1 Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes.

Bodexpress remained winless in 2020 heading into October, but a class drop into the allowance optional claiming ranks at Gulfstream Park West yielded a 11 1/4-length confidence boost. Ten days ago; he finished his on-track career with an 11-1 upset victory by a length; in the G1 Clark Stakes at Churchill Downs.

In total, Bodexpress finished his racing career with four wins in 17 starts for earnings of $694,600.

Bred in Kentucky by Martha Jane Mulholland, Bodexpress is out of the unraced City Zip mare Pied a Terre. The dam is a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Stormy Lord.

RACING RESULTS: AQUEDUCT STAKES RACES

0

It was a busy day in New York on Saturday, with no less than four stakes races on the card at Aqueduct. We previewed those races on Friday, so we thought it might be good to share the horse racing results from those races, so let’s get right to it.

Take a look at a quick recap of these signature events, and don’t forget to check out all the betting pools and different action options for racing enthusiasts available at JAZZSports’ Racebook.

Race #4 Remsen Stakes (G2)

The most important race on the Saturday card, the Remsen Stakes, was part of the Road to the Derby, so there were some valuable points up for grans. It proved to be a fantastic finish, with Brooklyn Strong winning by a neck at odds of 7/1. He edged ahead of Ten for Ten, who had led the entire way, coming into the stretch three-wide and powering home. The top four finishers in the race picked up Derby qualification points, with Known Agenda and Pickin’ Time finishing third and fourth, respectively.

Race #6 Go For Wand Handicap (G3)

It was another great finis in the sixth race at Aqueduct, with a neck one against separating first from second. Sharp Starr trailed Portal Creek from the off; but he got up late to edge it at the wire, paying $4.50 for the win. Nonna Madeline started the race as the joint favorite with the winner, finishing 12 lengths back of the front two. The Superfecta was rounded out by Stand for the Flag,

Race #9 Demoiselle Stakes (G2)

There were no real surprises in this race, with the odds-on favorite coming out on top. Malathaat was made to work for the win; though, coming good down the home stretch to get ahead of Millefueille at the finish line. Malibu Curl looked to be in the hunt as the leaders turned for home; but he weakened coming down the stretch, holding on to take third. Not a huge payday for bettors, with Malathaat paying $2.90 for the win.

Race #10 Cigar Mile Handicap (G1)

The day’s final race was one of the best horse racing results for bettors, especially for those playing the Exacta. It was True Timber finishing first, paying $16.60 for the win. He took control at the ¾ pole and never looked back, holding off Snapper Sinclair and Performer. The $1 Exacta paid $66.75.

2021 KENTUCKY DERBY: ROAD TO THE DERBY POINTS UPDATE

0

Given how things have gone in 2020, there is still some doubt as to when the 2021 Kentucky Derby will ultimately be run. The hope is that the upcoming COVID vaccine will allow us to return to some form of normalcy in the sport; which would include seeing the Derby return to its usual date in May.

For now, it’s business as usual in the Road to the Derby, with 36 races set to be run to determine the 20 horses that will race in the 2021 Kentucky Derby. We are still very early in the proceedings; although we do have a major race set to go this Saturday Dec. 5, with the Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct part of the 36-race qualification group. We will also have the Springboard Mile and the Los Alamitos Futurity to come this month before the calendar turns over into the new year.

The current setup sees 20 Prep Season races followed by 16 Championship Series races; with the latter group tending to be the one that separates the contenders from the pretenders. The top 4 finishers in each of the Road to the Derby races are awarded points that tally up over the course of the 36 races, with the top 20 moving on to the big race next May.

The Current Leaders in the Road to the Derby

The early leader in the standings is Essential Quality; who has amassed 30 points with wins at the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) and Breeders’ Futurity. Keepmeinmind moved to second in the standings with18 points after winning the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2). Rounding out the top 3 is Champagne (G1) winner Jackie’s Warrior with 12 points. Right behind the top trio is Get Her Number and Sittin on Go, both of whom have 10 points.

As we mentioned earlier; it is still very early in the qualification process, so we are more than likely going to see the leaders change and new challengers emerge in the coming weeks and months.

Be sure to follow us here at Jazz Horse Racing for all the latest 2021 Kentucky Derby updates; As well as tips, previews, and a host of other great content.
