GOLDEN GATE FIELDS REMAINS CLOSED DUE TO COVID: HORSE RACING NEWS

0
BERKELEY, CA - SEPTEMBER 2: A general view of the starting gates at during Summer Races at Golden Gate Fields on Sunday September 2, 2018 in Berkeley, California. (Photo by Cody Glenn/Getty Images)

The latest news have mostly been about COVID and the impact that it is having on the sport. While we see some tracks return to business and plan their upcoming season, others are still in the dark. Golden Gate Fields is one that is looking at an uncertain future.

California has proven to be one of the most restrictive states during the pandemic, so it was perhaps no real surprise to see Golden Gate shut down on Nov. 13 after 200 of the 540 track employees tested positive. The majority of those affected by the virus did not display any kind of symptoms, which was perhaps why it spread so quickly. Once the spread was discovered, there was little choice but to close the track temporarily.

When the announcement of the closure was made, it was suggested that Dec. 1 would be the return date. That date has come and gone, and the track remains closed.

Don’t forget to check out all the betting pools and different action options for racing enthusiasts available at JAZZSports’ Racebook.

What is the Next Step in Re-opening?

The sheer scale of the spread of the virus has a lot of people nervous. The racetrack routinely ran weekly temperature checks on everyone employed at Golden Gate Fields, but the absence of symptoms turned that into a somewhat fruitless enterprise. In this horse racing news, none of the employees affected held the racetrack responsible in any way. That said, the plan moving forward is to be a little stricter on testing.

While the majority of the employees affected by COVID are now back to full health after quarantining, the goal now is to ensure that everyone stays that way. With that in mind, Golden Gate Fields employees will now submit to twice weekly temperature checks while also being required to fill out a health screening form.

Officials at the track have stated that they are more concerned about the health of the people they employ than racing right now. This is not to suggest that they are giving up on the season, which is certainly not the case. The goal now is to reach a point where everyone is virus-free and healthy. Once that has been achieved, the track will then be able to re-open safely. We will try our best to keep you up to date on when that might happen. The hope is that it will be sooner rather than later.

TODAY’S RACING NEWS – ZIA PARK IS BACK IN BUSINESS

0

Today’s Racing News: There has been a lot of doom and gloom in the state of New Mexico over the past few weeks, with COVID cases spiking dramatically. With numbers on the rise, state officials decided that it was time to place restriction on non-essential businesses. That included Zia Park, which was forced to close in the middle of November.

The good news for race fans is that the restrictions are now on a county by county basis. Of the 1,684 new COVID cases announced in the state, 65 were in Lea County, the home of Zia Park. That number was deemed low enough to allow racing to return, which comes on Tuesday, December 2nd.

Before we continue on Today’s Racing news, take a look at some of the hottest horses betting odds currently available at JAZZSports.ag.

The Remaining Season Schedule at Zia Park

Besides the return of racing on Tuesday, Zia Park will also have a full card set to go on Wednesday. On the second day of action, the plan is to increase the previously advertised purse amounts by 30%, but that is pending approval by the New Mexico Racing Commission. Starting next week, live racing will be on the usual Monday through Wednesday schedule, all the way through to the final race day of the season, which comes on December 23rd.

While the barn will remain open through to the end of the year, there will be no more training allowed immediately following the final day of the race season.

As it stands at the moment, there are ten races set to go on Tuesday, so plenty of wagering opportunities for race fans looking to get back into horse betting at Zia Park.

CHURCHILL DOWNS TO INSTALL NEW $10 MILLION TURF COURSE IN 2021

0

Churchill Downs News: A week after shutting down its turf race course, Churchill Downs Racetrack has announced its plans to erect a new turf course that will cost $10 million, with the goal of boosting the number of races on the turf as well as the durability of the track.

Before we continue on with the latest news, take a look below at some of the hottest horses betting odds currently available at JAZZSports.ag:

Churchill Downs to Install New $10 Million Turf Course

Churchill Downs does not expect to open the track before the Spring Meet in 2022. The turf course could be open for training by December 2021. Construction is expected to begin after the end of the 2021 Spring Meet.

When the course is complete, it will feature a hybrid of bluegrass and fescue. It will measure 85 feet wide, five feet wider than what the Matt Winn Turf Course measures. The current oval has a drainage crown right down the middle of the track, which limits the number of horses. Today’s course still has the same surface that was there when it was opened in 1985. The new course will keep a comparable bluegrass and fescue blend. However, the subsurface will be more absorbent and stronger.

The subsurface will have a six-inch top root layer featuring a mix of gritty sand and topsoil. Below that will sit a six-inch layer made of masonry sand. The irrigation and drainage system will be updated, keeping the whole course level. The rail options will range from 0 to 36 feet out, with a maximum capacity of 14 horses per race.

As part of the change, Churchill Downs will stop horse stabling for eight weeks during the summer. The 2021 September meet will not have any turf races, to let the root structures get embedded.

In a typical year, about 25 percent of the races at Churchill Downs take place on the turf. In 2019, the track had 169 races scheduled for turf, but weather and/or turf forced 43 to be moved to dirt. On November 12, Winning Impression had a fatal injury on the turf, and no more races were run on that surface. Moving forward, the hope is that upgrading the surface and leveling the field will make the course safer and more durable for years to come.

RACING TIPS TODAY: WOODBINE’S 2020 MEET IS OFFICIALLY OVER

0

Racing Tips Today: Woodbine Entertainment had attempted to make the last three weeks of the 2020 meet work, but on Thursday the syndicate announced that the rest of the meet has been canceled. The provincial government in Ontario put the city of Toronto into a gray lockdown to attempt to bring down a recent spike in COVID-19 cases. While horse training was permitted, horse racing was stopped, and representatives of the horse racing industry did not manage to persuade officials to give Woodbine an exemption to complete the meet.

Woodbine’s 2020 Meet Is Officially Over

Racing tips today will point toward events south of the border, as horse racing continues (although without fans in the stands) in the United States. In a statement, Jim Lawson, CEO of Woodbine Entertainment, said, “While I am extremely disappointed we are not able to complete the 2020 Thoroughbred meet, what we achieved this year in face of significant adversity is quite remarkable. Together, we were able to develop, implement and follow strict COVID-19 prevention protocols that allowed us to be the first sport to return to competition in Canada since the shutdowns in March. We safely resumed racing in early June and ran almost 100 racing cards, more than 900 races, and the majority of our stakes schedule, including the 161st running of The Queen’s Plate.”

The 2020 meet had been expected to conclude on December 13. The next racing at Woodbine will take place next April. For those who have an interest in upcoming stakes races, there are six more Kentucky Derby prep races scheduled throughout the remainder of the 2020 calendar.

In December, the prep action starts again on the fifth, with the Remsen Stakes set for Aqueduct. On December 16, Kawasaki will host the Zen-Nippon Nisai Yushun, a stakes that offers double the typical point distribution for the top four finishers. On December 19, the Los Alamitos Futurity will go off, and the next day, Remington Park will host the Springboard Mile. So while Woodbine has gone dark for the year, there are plenty of high-stakes races left on the 2020 calendar.

Santa Anita Released Winter/Spring Stakes Schedule

For those looking for horse tips, Nashville, Independence Hall, Collusion Illusion and Charlatan are four horses getting early looks for the Malibu Stakes, which should be one of the best races at the end of 2020. In addition to the Grade I events, three other stakes are set for December 26. The Mathis Brothers Mile (Grade II turf), the San Antonio Stakes (Grade II), both with $200,000 purses, and the Lady of Shamrock Stakes, with a $75,000 purse.

Another big day on the Santa Anita Park schedule will be March 6. On that day, the Santa Anita Handicap (Grade I) and the Frank E. Kilroe Mile (Grade I Turf) will each offer $400,000 purses. That same day, the San Felipe Stakes, a Grade II event with a $300,000 purse that is one of the most significant Kentucky Derby prep races on the American horse racing calendar, will take place. The $200,000 San Carlos Stakes (Grade II) and the $75,000 China Doll Stakes will round out that day’s schedule.

On March 13, the Beholder Mile (Grade I) will offer a $300,000 purse for mares and fillies. The San Simeon Stake (Grade III Turf), with a $100,000 purse, will run from the newly installed turf chute over six furlongs.

On April 3, Santa Anita Park will feature the $750,000 Santa Anita Derby, a Grade I race that has seen 18 Kentucky Derby winners win there first. The $400,000 Santa Anita Oaks (Grade II) and two stakes for California-bred horses, the $200,000 Evening Jewel Stakes and the $200,000 Echo Eddie Stakes, are both set for that day.

May 31 will bring the $300,000 Hollywood Gold Cup (Grade I), along with the $300,000 Gamely and the $300,000 Shoemaker Mile, both Grade I events on the turf. The season will wrap on June 19 and 20, with the San Juan Capistrano Stakes (Grade III, 1 ¾ miles on the turf) and the American Stakes (Grade III, one mile on the turf) to bring the season to a close. Code of Honor has won multiple Grade I stakes and will have a full field of rivals – in terms of quality and quantity, as By My Standards, Owendale and Mr Freeze have all won graded stakes as well. Code of Honor won the Travers Stakes and the Jockey Club Gold Cup in 2019 but missed a lot of races in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, not racing until the Westchester Stakes on June 6, which he won. John Velazquez, his normal jockey, will be back on board for him this week.

By My Standards came in eighth at the Breeders’ Cup Classic in early November, his only failure to hit the board in seven 2020 starts, so he will be looking for a rebound. His rider, Gabriel Saez, notes that By My Standards loves the track at Churchill Downs more than he liked the surface at Keeneland in his last race. Owendale has won three Grade III stakes and finished second to By My Standards at the Alysheba Stakes. He won the Blame Stakes at Churchill Downs to start 2020; his turn at the Breeders’ Cup Championships produced a fifth-place result in the Dirt Mile. He came in second at the 2019 Clark Stakes, finishing behind Tom’s d’Etat. This race is the highlight of the racing card for the weekend.

RACING POST TIPS: INTO MISCHIEF BEATS TAPIT AS BIGGEST SEASON EARNER

0

Racing Post Tips: Into Mischief has put together a terrific career as a sire as well as on the racetrack, and he has a comfortable lead as he moves toward the second straight season in which his progeny have earned more money than that of any other sire. Working for Spendthrift Farm, Into Mischief has broken the record that Tapit had set for single-season earnings for a sire.

Into Mischief Beats Tapit as Biggest Season Earner

Racing post tips indicate that, through November 22, the progeny of Into Mischief have earned $19,994,720, based on Daily Racing Form data. Tapit, with Gainesway Farm, had set the previous record in 2016 at $19,907,973. That had been the third straight year in which Tapit had broken the record.

The fact that Into Mischief is so far ahead of the record with a month left in the 2020 campaign makes this year even more impressive. Tapit’s progeny has earned $11,429,760 so far in 2020.

During the weekend of November 20-22, Into Mischief had four different horses from his progeny win races: Gracetown won at Laurel Park in an allowance; Aasr won a maiden special weight race at Churchill Downs. Valletta prevailed in a maiden claiming event at Aqueduct, and Life is Good won his debut by 9 ½ lengths at Del Mar in a maiden special weight.

The top earner for Into Mischief this year, of course, has been Authentic, who brought in over $6.1 million this year all by himself, winning both the Kentucky Derby and the Breeders’ Cup Classic. He brought in more money by winning the Haskell Stakes and finishing second at the Preakness Stakes. Getting three wins brought Authentic an additional $1 million in bonus money that does not count toward Into Mischief’s progeny earnings.

Authentic retired shortly after winning the Breeders’ Cup Classic and is headed to stud, where he will start building a progeny list of his own.Other horses from his progeny that have won this year include Gamine (Breeders’ Cup Filly), Dayoutoftheoffice (Frizette Stakes winner, runner-up at Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies) and eight other winners of graded stakes.

The next prep race for the Kentucky Derby is the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (Grade II) on November 28. The first four finishers earn Kentucky Derby points in 10-4-2-1 format. The race dates back to 1920 and runs 1 1/16 miles, or 8 ½ furlongs. It takes place on a left-handed dirt track. In 2019, the winner here was Silver Prospector, with Ricardo Santana Jr on board.

There will be five more prep races in 2020 in addition to the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes. The Cattleya Stakes is also on November 28, at the Tokyo Racecourse. On December 5, the Remsen Stakes will run at Aqueduct. Both of these prep races offer 10-4-2-1 points to the first four finishers. The Zen-Nippon Nisai Yushun Stakes, in Kawasaki, is set for December 16, and will offer 20-8-4-2 in points to the top four.

The Los Alamitos Futurity, set for December 19 at Los Alamitos Race Course; and the Springboard Mile, set for December 20 at Remington Park; also offer 10-4-2-1 point configurations.
