Racing Tips Today: Woodbine Entertainment had attempted to make the last three weeks of the 2020 meet work, but on Thursday the syndicate announced that the rest of the meet has been canceled. The provincial government in Ontario put the city of Toronto into a gray lockdown to attempt to bring down a recent spike in COVID-19 cases. While horse training was permitted, horse racing was stopped, and representatives of the horse racing industry did not manage to persuade officials to give Woodbine an exemption to complete the meet.

Woodbine’s 2020 Meet Is Officially Over
Racing tips today will point toward events south of the border, as horse racing continues (although without fans in the stands) in the United States. In a statement, Jim Lawson, CEO of Woodbine Entertainment, said, “While I am extremely disappointed we are not able to complete the 2020 Thoroughbred meet, what we achieved this year in face of significant adversity is quite remarkable. Together, we were able to develop, implement and follow strict COVID-19 prevention protocols that allowed us to be the first sport to return to competition in Canada since the shutdowns in March. We safely resumed racing in early June and ran almost 100 racing cards, more than 900 races, and the majority of our stakes schedule, including the 161st running of The Queen’s Plate.”
The 2020 meet had been expected to conclude on December 13. The next racing at Woodbine will take place next April. For those who have an interest in upcoming stakes races, there are six more Kentucky Derby prep races scheduled throughout the remainder of the 2020 calendar.
In December, the prep action starts again on the fifth, with the Remsen Stakes set for Aqueduct. On December 16, Kawasaki will host the Zen-Nippon Nisai Yushun, a stakes that offers double the typical point distribution for the top four finishers. On December 19, the Los Alamitos Futurity will go off, and the next day, Remington Park will host the Springboard Mile. So while Woodbine has gone dark for the year, there are plenty of high-stakes races left on the 2020 calendar.
